New Brake Woes

Hey TT'ers,

I just bought a new brake rotor for the front of my Honda XR650R.

Installation went OK even though there were no directions in or on the box.

I installed brand new brake pads too.

I went out for a ride and the front brake has some serious issues.

It feels like a warped rotor especially at low speeds right before a complete stop.

It’s really bad. I put the bike on the stand and turned the front wheel while “eyeballing” it and everything looks perfectly straight though.

I didn't get any grease or oil on the rotor while installing it.

I'm stumped. &%$#@!?

Any ideas what I can trouble-shoot?

Just a thought: maybe it needs to "seat", break in a bit?

good luck

I would have...... Ahhhhh....... forget it. No brakes....

Hi Max Power,

That's the one I bought! :)

I know it's a killer brake rotor, but I either installed mine wrong or the rotor is dicked-up and EBC will replace it with a new one.

I'll figure it out...

Crap..... Now you have my attention. I wonder what is going on?

Sorry you are having problems with this mod.

Can you post a pic?

Hey DS6fitty. It took about 150 mi for these brakes and rotors to settle in.

Hope this helps.

I don't have my digital camera handy, and you wouldn't be able to see anything wrong with the brake anyway. :)

But, this thing is messed up.

When I'm coming to a stop my front brake's hand lever actually "pulsates" (he said "pulsates") back and forth!!! :D

It's got to be a warped rotor. I'm going to cop another look at it in the garage. :)

That is strange.

Well, the rotor seems to be in perfect shape - it's round and shows no signs of warpage. :)

I probably did something wrong with the caliper. I'll call EBC tomorrow and take it to the local shop if I have too...

It's a warped rotor.

EBC just e-mailed me at 11 PM. They're going to replace it ASAP. Great service!!! :)

Make sure you torque the rotor bolts in a criss cross pattern as tightening... :)

:D

Well DS Six Fiddy..... What up?

Well, the EBC rep said they shipped out a brand new oversize rotor kit AND some sintered brake pads to me for FREE last Friday.

I hope they make it here this week as I have my first enduro to race this Saturday...

Holy Fu.......nky chicken.... that looks like fun. Keep us posted.

What river is that?

That's the Umpqua River... probably named after an Indian Chief that roamed the area back in the day.

The Funky Chicken is a National Enduro hosted at the Big-K sportsman's ranch south of Eugene, Oregon near Elkton, Oregon. I've never been down there, but it's supposed to be the best riding and racing in Oregon.

Big K Ranch

I'll take pics and write up a race report if I survive.

Besides Chickens, there's a lot of Turkeys down there too. I'll probably look like a Turkey with my dual sport kit, but I don't care... I've got a new tire and I'm ready to ROOST on some fellow newbies...

Thanks. Look forward to the report. :)

OK, I got my new EBC Oversized brake it from UPS today and installed it.

It ROCKS!!!

With just 1 or 2 fingers on the brake lever it will haul you to a stop REAL FAST! :)

Nice.

And it gets even better with a couple hundred miles on it.
