2 stroke ban???

Ive been hearing over the last year or so that people are trying to get the 2 stroke banned because it pollutes so much. Is this true? do you guys think they will make them illegal in the future?

is that why 4 strokes are getting so much attention these days?

Banned? Not yet but possibly close......

there are several reasons .... EPA - emissions requirements - 2strokes put out more bad emissions than 4strokes - I believe they have til 06/07 to comply with new emission requirements

not many people purchase 125's anymore - they buy 250F's - no one in pro ranks ride 125's much anymore -

There may be a exclusion to 125's/250's as "race only bikes" "Competition Only" that allow them to continue to be made past 07...

You will see every 2 stroke motor in every power tool, lawn mower etc....affected by this -

They should ban bean burritos because they create noxious emissions.

It's why there was a rule change to allow an engine displacement handicap to four-strokes to begin with. The "ban on two-strokes" has been hanging just over the horizon for 25-30 years. Several sanctioning bodies were growing worried that, with no one developing four strokes for MX, the sport might disappear altogether, or at least be severely stunted, if two-strokes were clamped down on. The rule change was intended to encourage new model development. Yamaha, of course, was on that like seagulls at the dump.

BTW, the last comparison I remember seeing on the subject showed that a 1972 Kawasaki 500cc 3 cyl exceeded the 1973 smog standards (which were almost four times as lenient as today's) by 27 times!

The new wave of 2 clean air 2 strokes are coming in the next few years..just like the all the new fangled 4 strokes.. you will slowly start to see 2 strokes that burn cleaner than 4 strokes and that have great power increases of the current 2 strokes. it is already happening with boat engines and starting to trickle down to snowmobiles.
