BRP W/ Edelbrock hesitates

I bought an '01 dual sported XR650r recently and have ridden it about 100 miles. It has an edelbrock but I have no manual etc. for the carb. Yesterday, it sputtered and hesitated when I rolled on the throttle going down the road at mid to high rpm-sort of like when you are running out of gas. It also backfires mildly but steadily when I'm off the throttle coasting down hill. I think it might be running rich? I'm not sure and I don't know much about carburation. Any advise would be greatly appreciated-got to get ready for Moab this weekend.

Sounds like it is running lean not rich. Popping on decell is a lean condition. Sounds like somethings plugged up. Has it been sitting?

Sounds lean to me too. Try richening (turn to right) the needle height with the adjuster in the cap. I have to richen mine a couple of clicks in the cooler weather, then lean it back out in late spring when the weather heats up.

is there anywhere I can go on the net to get some info on how to adjust the carb?-I don't even know where the adjuster is. It has been sitting for a good while. It also hesitates when I roll off the throttle after accelerating.

I'll bet edelbrock will send you a manual.

Also, it definatetly sounds lean.

There is a little knob on top of the carb. With the engine off (of course), pull the throttle all the way up to raise the slide. At the top of the slide is a slot, like for a slotted srewdriver. The little knob has a screwdriver blade on it that you cannot see.

You can feel a bit of tension when the slot is engaged, you can adjust it via "clicks", similar to suspension settings. Based on what your post said. I'd turn it to the right 2 clicks and try it out. Right = rich.

Another tip: the little lever on the side should be horizontal when riding. It should be raised maybe 20 degrees/10mm at the end (up or down) to start a cold bike. After it is running a minute or two, put it horizontal. Maybe your driveability problems are just this!!!!!

There is not much else to mess with on the carbs, but I'd search for a pdf of the manual.

I'll scan and email parts of mine if you pm me. I'll bet the manual is available as a pdf on the net somewhere.

Not all of em have that little lever. Mine doesn't. I called Edelbrock on that and they confirmed that it was not a part of the XR650R model carb.

What is the ( little lever ) your talkin about ?? :naughty:

I'm getting a used carb. from another TT'r .. :naughty:

Is it a older model setup or newer, Maybe a richening valve.. :D

My carb. will hopefully be here next week, Can't wait.... :D

Yes. According to Edelbrocks literature, only ATV model carbs have an enrichener system.

Possibly the earlier version's of motorcycle carbs did as well, I dont know.

Best thing that happened to my XR though, without question. :naughty:

The carb does not have a knob on top-only a hex-head bolt. The lever on the side was horizontal. I changed the plug while I had the tank off then test rode it. The only time I could make it significantly backfire was rolling off the throttle at high rpm and coasting downhill. How can I make this edelbrock model richer???

You'll have to remove that hex plug and use a flat blade screwdriver to make adjustments to the needle or buy the adjustment tool which screws into the top of the carb. The adjustment tool is normally screwed in and permanently left in place. Check with the previous owner and see if he still has it. A little popping on decel from WOT is not a big deal and is how I set up my bikes, but if you're getting a lot of popping, then you more than likely need to make an adjustment. Have you contacted Edelbrock about getting a manual yet?

Contact Rob at rob@barnumspro.com because he helped set up at edelbrock for the xrs . He knows them well and used to be employed by them and probably has all the connections and answers. He did for me. And remember "right rich and left lean " that is the direction for turning screw on top . If it is a non-pumper it can be updated to be. ask Rob.

call Edelbrock. I lost my setup/cheat sheet for tuning the QS. They were pretty helpful and emailed me a copy. It is nice to keep in the toolbox. I have mine set up for 12-13 clicks left after closing it all the way. Thats with the airbox mod also. Remember to open throttle all the way to lift that screw up far enough. But do call Barnum, I am sure he or the guys at edelbrock can set you up with a red knob for nothing. Oh, and definitely lean.
