Rear Sprocket

I am sure this has been discussed before but here goes anyway. Got an 02 YZ426 that I ride track and trails with. Just started with the trails and am finding out that I am "featuring" the clutch a lot more than I probably need to be. I changed the rear sprocket to a 48 tooth for some unknown reason long before I started riding trails. My question is will adding a different sprocket with several more teeth make that much difference. If not what will or is it just me???

There are alot of schools of thought on how to lower gearing on the bike, some people like bigger rear sprockets, some people like smaller front sprockets. If you ride track and trails, it is just easier (and cheaper) to change a front sprocket than a rear if your bike will be running double duty. I use stock 49 for rear and so all I have to do is switch between 13 (trail) and 14 (moto)front for gearing adjustments. my 2cts

14/51 gearing plus a 12oz flywheel weight and you've got the ultimate woods bike with that YZ. :)

I run 13/52 on my 426 right now, but I'm thinking of trying 14/52 to see if I like it. I found that in really technical stuff the 13/52 works great but sometimes (in the desert) I wish it had a little more juice.

I run the stock gearing 14 front and 49 rear. I ride alot of trails. This is the best all around gearing in my opinion. Lots of speed and still works good in the tight stuff.

I run a 14 front and a 50 rear. I may put a 52 on this spring.

TIGER44, I dropped 1 tooth in the front from stock and it worked just fine!

I sure do appreciate it guys. I think the renthal 48 tooth that I bought for looks was just a waste of money so I am going this weekend to more than likely try the 14/52 combo.

Something no one else mentioned is that adding 1 tooth in the front is like adding 3 to the rear, so you don't get as much fine tuning if you change out the rear.

Right idea, backwards interpretation. :naughty: Adding one to the front is like subtracting a few from the rear, and vise versa.

I can vouch for the 14/52 setup. I ride both Trails and MX and it seems to work well on both. Good idea about switching out the front with the stock 49. I had to buy all new and the 14/52 is what I went with. Very happy... :naughty:
