426 Topend rebuild

I am about to do a topend rebuild on my 01 426. Can you remove the head and barrel with the motor still in the frame?

Yes, but getting the head up and over the front chain guide can be a little tricky. I'd recommend raising the head about 2" and resting it on a wood block while you pop the guide out (snaps into the cylinder and crankcase) to get it out of the way. I like to re-assemble the same way in reverse, but you have to be sure the guide gets back where it belongs before the head goes down. See if you can also remove the chain tensioner shoe from the bottom with the head in place. Otherwise, take it out while the head rests on the block.

you probably already know this... but removing the radiators is also essential to getting the top end off and on.
