I just installed a new FMF Q silencer on my 01 yz 426 and it works great. I did have to drop down one jet size on my carb and drop the needle down one notch but it now runs great. This is a great pipe for exhaust flow and low noise. Purchased through www.rockymountainatv.com. Check them out!

From all that I have read, the purpose built FMF Q seems to be the top of the hill when it comes to quiet exhausts. If you can be loud sometimes then maybe consider another exhaust with a quiet insert, but if you have to be quiet most or all of the time then the FMF Q would be the way that I personally would go. Have fun!

I just installed the Promoto spark arrestor end piece in my '02 YZ426 and got the silent insert to go with it. My bike is set up for woods only, no street use, but I still wanted to quiet it down a little. I'll be trying it out this weekend and let you know how much diiference it makes. My hope is that the insert has no power-robbing drawbacks to it.

Just to let you know my bike with a PMB endcap and quiet insert in a stock YZ exhaust with fresh packing was sound tested at 101db. Although the insert quiets the tone down slightly, it will not be in the same range as the "Q".

When I ride in areas where I must meet the requirements I switch to my WR exhaust w/baffle. Not hard to do, but I was a little dissapointed that I was unable to pass with the PMB insert.

Get retested. My 426 and many others pass 96 dB no problem with the quiet insert out at Hollister Hills in NorCal.

I was tested at Hollister also. Not sure why it was so loud. I'm beginning to wonder if the kids they have doing the sound checks really understand how to do the test. After I failed one of them told me to go to the store and buy the quiet insert. I then had to explain that I had the quiet insert and that it was already in there  . Pretty obvious, especially if that is your job. Oh well. Luckily I had my stock exhaust , so I retested at 88db.

What I am getting at is that there are still too many variables in the testing process. I don't have a problem with making my bike comply with the 96db. but when I pay extra $$ for a product that is supposed the make me legal and it fails because of poor testing procedures, it makes me wonder. I know there are many of you out there that have passed with the same setup as me, so I know it can be done. And yes, the silencer has plenty of packing.:cry:

Do you notice and performance drop with the insert in?

Not really. Although I haven't ridden it much without the insert. I just leave it in because it still sounds good and is never short on power :  . I installed the JD jetting at the same time as the YZ exhaust /PMB S/A and quiet insert, and I must say that it is like a whole different bike compared with the stock exhaust and jetting  .

I've got the quiet insert in mine too, and I don't think it changed the sound that much either. When you're putting around it is pretty quiet, but when you go WOT it is almost as loud as it was before.

As for it being a product that is supposed to make you legal, I don't think they ever advertised the QA for the 450 as being a 96db exhaust option. They say that about the 250 QA, but the 450 just says it will be quieter.

As for power differences, I didn't notice that much of a loss at all. It still rocks.

The latest issue of Dirt Rider has the PMB ad stating that "96db quiet inserts are available." So as far as advertising it at 96db, yes they do. This is for the stock WR as well as YZF,CRF etc. w/ the S/A endcap.

Does your bike have a throttle stop like the american WR's? Check it out. My bike didn't have full throttle until I replaced it with the YZ stop. Not sure if this is what you ment by your post or were you just refering to the choked up exhaust?

This makes me a bit nervous. I also have an 02 426, use the PMB sparky/quiet insert and ride at Hollister a lot. I've never been tested and the Rangers always tell me that the PMB's usually pass. I'd sure hate to get tested one day and have to go home.

The rangers that I have talked to are usually pretty cool. My buddy failed the test with his XR400 w/ FMF power core 4 and the let him ride, he just didn't get the sticker (he now has the the quiet insert). They seem to patrol the main roads and the camping areas more than way back on the trails. If I were you I would get tested to see where your at, you may be under and not even know it:applause: . With the PMB s/a and quiet insert you are making an attempt to be responsible and the rangers appreciate this. Don't forget the also give a 1 or 2 db cushion, so you don;t have to be right at 96db. Good luck:thumbsup:
