tossing the airbox for a direct K&N?

Some of you replace the big honking air filter with a K&N unit inside the airbox. Others drill a mess of holes in the airbox to let more air in. So the next logical question is why not toss the airbox and the intake and bolt a K&N Pod straight onto the carb body. We do that to street bikes all the time. Seriously leans out the midrange though so end up having to raise the needles a bunch. Kinda kills gas milage but darn if I'm not trying my best to convert as much stored hydrocabon energy into nice plant food (C02) and water vapor so I'm not the least bit concerned about that - I'm doing my best for the environment, see.

Anyone done this? What I'm really trying to get away with is putting a nice battery where the airbox used to be.

The problem I see with that is the K&N don't seem to filter as good as a foam filter (fine dust) and it leaves the filter open to all the elements during a nice muddy ride. My 2 cents.

The intake is tuned to use the airbox and incorporates a velocity stack eliminating this will change the power band and jetting will be needed.

I have heard there are gains in hp when using the carbon fiber airbox and velocity stack together. I have one on mine, but i have not ridden it yet.

the biggest problem is K&N air filters have no place on a dirt bike. if it's dusty or you might come anywhere near a puddle, it won't be of any use. put one on your street bike or in your truck (they're in both of mine) but not your dirt bike.

Absolutely! :cry: Only Marcus can use a K&N filter on a dirt bike. The rest of us will have to stick to the old tried and true method of an air box and foam oiled filter. :cry:

K & N Filter are bad for dirt bikes. :cry: I replaced two pistons in one season on my quad before I figured what the problem was. :cry: K & N have good air flow and probably are fine for street use.

ok, how about one of 'dem oiled foam filters just strapped to the intake? Yeah ok so no velocity stack and such but at least I've solved the dust issue, right?

I was thinking about this the other day too........I ride on the street, some of you may have seen my bike posted a few weeks ago.

I ride 80% street, 20% dirt, its more for dicking about on really, not hacking about anywhere dusty in England!!

Was thinking of bolting on a K&N to the intake but I always find those damd filters DO let in small particles of dust......

If its gonna require jetting again then I might try it out with a pipercross foam one and get they boys down my local Dydo shop to set it up for me. :cry:
