Cleaning the QwikSilver

Lately, my bike has been hard to start and yesterday it got to the point where I couldn't get it running at all!--even when bumping it :cry: I checked the spark and it looked great so decided it must be a carburation thing. A couple months ago, the plunger assembly sheared off because there was so much dirt down there. The fine people at Edelbrock sent me out a new plunger, no questions. At that time, I cleaned out the area the plunger went in but didn't take the bowl off. I figured there must be some dirt in the carb so I opened her up. Being bored and thinking this might help someone, I've got photos of taking the qs apart. Here ya go!

here is the cotter pin that you have to remove in order to pull out the plunger asbly. This cotter pin has caused many a pig riders problems if the ends start to hit the likage.

after you get the cotter pin out, slide the pumper linkage out

undo the two set allens to pull the plunger out

here is the bowl coming off. Be careful of the small brass needle you see standing on end. It goes down the journal on the bowl

remove the metal plate which is gasketed on either side

here is the inside of the bowl. There was little to no dirt in the carb so I opted not to remove the float, etc. I've done it before and it's pretty straight forward

So, after taking the carb apart, I didn't find any sediment, dirt or sand so I was kinda stumped. :cry: As I was putting the carb back together I noticed that the end of the breather tube was perfectly sealed due to hitting some heat, probably the exhaust (i have no idea how that happened?!) I cut the end, and gas poured out. :cry: I knew this was a good thing. Put the carb back on, whacked the throttle twice to get a little gas in there and purrrrrrrrr kitty purrrrrrrr! She's back to one easy kick, hot or ice cold :cry:

alright guys, I can't figure it out. How can I post pics here like before where I would just past the address and the image would appear? There is no "image" tab any longer or I'm just blind. Help! :cry:

Can someone confirm that the spring in picture 5 is supposed to be there? I pulled my accelerator pump today and didn't find a spring down the shaft. All I found was the bearing.

I'll confirm this spring is definitely there in 4 different Edelbrock carbs I have because I just got done inspecting / cleaning carbs on over a dozen different bikes (Edelbrocks, PWK's, FCR's, etc).

Thanks, I'll see if the spring shop has one that'll work, otherwise, I guess I'm calling Edelbrock. Regarding the bearing, where in the shaft is it supposed to sit? There is a hole drilled off to the side inside the shaft and then there is also a chamfer right in the middle of the shaft. I'm assuming it supposed to sit in the hole but I want to double check. Also, what purpose does it serve?

Regarding keeping the guts of the pumper clean, when I am going to store the bike for a couple of weeks I disconnect the fuel line from the tank, drain the gas out of it, spray a bunch of carb cleaner into the line then run the bike for a minute or so to get the cleaner into the carb. Think this will do anything to reduce varnish inside the carb or am I waisting my time?

I've been doing exactly what you describe for quite a long time, never had a problem resulting from this practice.
