03 yz450..I'm a big boy

I just picked up an 03 YZ450F. The thing is awesome, and

the guy I bought it from raced it and worked at shop and has

it dialed in :cry:..Its has a complete pro-pilot-tuned suspension, but he was 180 and I'm 290 with gear.....

I haven't been to englishtown yet, but plan on going this

weekend to brush up on my skills....The question is, can I,

should I, do anything to the suspension? I'm used to ride

when I was younger=lighter :cry:, but it was all trail/woods riding with very limited MX time.... Any ideas..

BTW...this place rocks. Joe. :cry:

I would DEFINATELY step up the suspension, you won't like it if you don't. (just my 2 cents). I've always rode my bike and 'adjusted' to how it rides, now that I've dialed in my suspension I'm wondering why I didn't do it years ago when I first started riding harder. :cry:

I agree....the question is how?

Take it to a reputable suspension guy. You might end up getting in over your head unless you're enlightened in the art of forks/shocks. Or..... go to heavier oil, springs and adjust rebound/compression accordingly. That you can do.

i'm the same weight as you and use .52/6.6 but i run HS not MX i still bottom on the really big jumps. on my forks(which are the same as yours)i put in mobil 1 syn trans fluid (which is 7 1/2 weight compared to the stock 5) and then to run a little higher oil i had to add a subtank which brought it back to normal plushness. the $hit you gotta do when your bigger than average!!! oh the shock is crap that definately needs revalve,i didn't have to do the forks with the other mods. :cry:

I'm no expert by a long shot but I think your stock fork springs are .46kg/mm. and I bet your going to need around .52kg/mm. As for the rear, I think you may need around a 6.0kg/mm. You can post this question on the suspension forum and get pro feedback :cry: Enjoy the new bike!

Start by getting it sprung for you. Then ride it and work with the clickers. I wouldn't just throw heavier oil in the forks either. Adjust on oil height and compression/rebound settings first. If you really want to make it work take it one step at a time and think about the changes you make as you go along. Do one thing at a time and then ride it. :cry:

since you're a Jersey Guy, and you need to have your suspension fined tuned for you, check out Pro Pilot (they have a website, just Google it), they're right in Jersey, do good work and will turn it around fast. (find out if the guy you bought the bike from had any work suspension work done before you call/send it in)

i'm not as big as you, but at 220, i was overpowering the stock suspension, and needed work done. the difference was night and day, and well worth the $$$.

I'm 275 with gear...on my 05 450 I still had 15 mm static sag after adjusting race sag to 105 mm.This is with the stock spring.

After reading all these big boy posts I'm wondering if I measured the static correctly. :cry:

I know just enough to be dangerous when it comes to suspension but I would measure rear sag before changing any parts.

Buy springs to match your weight. Check with a good local suspension specialist for his recommendations. One of the best basic things you can do to the YZs is put enough spring on them so that you can ease up on the compression damping a little. Makes them much plusher. :cry:

Yea, some stiffer springs then worry about fluid, fluid height, and clicker settings.

on a side note, I just went with a 50/50 mix of mobile 1 atf and enzo o1 weight....my forks are awesome!...im 210- 215 right now...I went one heavier on the springs and 10mm higer on the fork oil...great bottoming resistance for me now.

Viper...I got your pm last night and responded to it but the new tt software erased it. PM me again and we'll set something up....I have a 6 year old who rides a xr-50....well xr-88 now...we go to njorvp all the time.
