K&N VS UNI filters

I was told today that the Uni filter will not stop the very fine dust from getting threw. The guy that I was talking to has about 10 quads between himself and his family. They all go ridding together almost everyweekend. He said that about 2 of the bikes had Uni filters and the rest K&N filters. The ones with the Uni filters had a layer if realy fine dirt between the carb and the airbox, but the K&N bikes did not. Has anyone else seen this. I just got one for my bike a couple of weeks ago and only ridden it onece sence then.

I have had a Uni on my 400 for 5 years, on the 650 for almost a year, and no problems. I had a K&N on a four wheeler and saw dust in it.

I used K@N for years but now use Uni and they are great.The last K@N I bought was made overseas so I decided to buy american which left me no choice except Uni. :cry:

I think it's just the opposite of what this guy told you. If you look at the airflow ratios, the K&N flows much better. Which IMO means that there is a probability for more dust and what not to get into them. If a UNI is properly installed(oiled and lip greased) there should be no reason for dust.

I agree with Tim. The K&N offers a very thin physical barrier to catch debris. It may be fine for road use, and will definitely flow more air. What happens on a long ride when the oil coated strands get saturated with dirt? Instead of dust adhering to the thin layer of sticky filter media, it is going to go right thru. The Uni has a deeper filter media which will continue to trap dirt/dust as the outer layer gets coated. I have never had any dusty film in my airbox with the Uni. You just have to be careful installing it and use grease around the perimeter.

Exactly, that’s why they recommend a filter skin on the K&N when being used in dusty off-road situations. The thicker foam filters are a must if riding on dirt. I started using foam filters on my truck and SUV after the layer of dust I was finding on the wall of the air ducts after a long dirt drive. The K&N is a great race track filter but worthless off-road.
