Base (non-motor) XR650R power-up kit: Needle and jet

Hi all,

I'm trying to do this one on the cheap... and I am wondering what differences exist between the needle/needle jet in the stock setup vs. the power-up kit.

I went to 165/65, moved the needle clip down one notch, removed the intake restrictor/cut the rubber smooth, opened up the airbox, and opened the exhaust a bit. We are a tad rich at low rpm (I believe) but otherwise fine. Would I get anything more with the power-up needle and needle jet? Or should I just save for a pumper? (oh, as if I can handle all that BRP power after being a 250 rider for years) :)

The powerup kit includes specific jets for use with the non-epa intake, HRC tip & airbox restrictors removed for use under specific riding conditions. While the included jetting may work great for specific riding conditions (temperature, altitude & humidity), it's not necessarily the best fit for everyone. Experience to know how a lean/rich bike feels/sounds along with reading the spark plug will help to assure you have the best jetting for your application. I've heard it said that it takes 20% effort to get a bike 80% jetted correctly, but 80% more effort to get that last 10 - 20% figured out. You can also have an experienced tuner jet your carb to get the most out of it if you don't want to tackle it yourself. Try and get your stock carb dialed in first (either yourself or with help) and see how you like it. Most people are happy enough with the stock carb. You can always get a pumper later on if you choose.
