How do WRF's compare to YZF's?

I'm looking to move up from my XR250 to something that is a little more track friendly. Most of my riding is on trails but my son likes to ride tracks once an a while. When I follow him around the track my XR250 is a dog. I think a WRF426 might be the next logical step to take. The pure MX bikes seem to require a lot of maintenance compared to my XR250.

Does a WRF require the same amount or frequency of maintenance as a YZF?

Can a 6'3" 210 person have fun (not race) on a MX track with a WRF 426?

Do all WRF's have a spark arrester?

If you are on a XR250, a WR250F is a nice step up. It has as much hp as an XR400. I just got rid of my WR426 because I think they are a little too heavy but a guy your size won't have any problem with the 250 or 426. Either of these will be WAY more fun than your XR250.

The WR's are very reliable and it's the same engine in the WR and YZ so maintenance should be the same. All the WR's come with the SA.

Other than the fact the XR does not have the "instant on" that you will find with the Yamahas I would also consider the following: 1) do you need the lights? Personally I like having them. You never now when you will be coming out from a ride a night. 2) The WR has different gearing (5 speed WR vs. 4 speed YZ) than the YZ trails or track?? 3) the suspension on the WR is softer than the YZ...again trails or track. 4) Of course then there is the magic button (AKA e start) and weight. I think either bike will do both things but if you ride trail more I would lean towards the WR..Just mt 2 cents. :cry:

Your number 2 is almost correct. Only the YZ450's have a 4 speed, all other YZ's have 5 speeds including the YZ426

Number 4, again only the WR450 and the 03' and up 250's have electric start.

My bad...I was off on a few points.. kinda figured he might buck up and go with a 450...maybe not though :cry:.

I ride an XR250R, and two of my buddies ride YZ250F's. They are very eager and fun bikes, but I can't stand the transmission. We ride mostly New England rock garden trails, and first gear on the YZ is much too tall for my liking. Also, I feel top gear is too low. At a moderate cruising speed, where my XR would be just humming along, the YZ is screaming, and I keep trying to find a higher gear. I think as an XR rider you would feel the same. I'm considering trading my XR for a WR250F.

I have a 2002 wr cdn edition. I made it street legal, changed to the YZ seat and tank combo to have better ergonomics. But then I added an Acerbis tank to get more range. I do mainly mx track so my suspension is set up for it. I really love that machine. And when I ride in the woods, I sometime play with the clickers to soften things up a bit.

I tried a lot of other bikes, 4 and 2 strokes. But having the possibility to use the bike on the road and use the performance on the track makes my WR my only choice. But a YZ will be better on a the track if you are a really, REALLY hot mx rider. For a lot of us, the wr stands up to the pack with the usual weight loss program. :cry:

Anyway, YZF or WR you learn to love it :cry:
