03 WR450 Why a RED STICKER in California???

10 posts in this topic

The problem came with the larger displacement, they need to meet a sound and tail pipe spec, when they choked it down to make it quiet, the emissions came up, so if you'll notice the 05 compression ratio dropped to 12.2:1 from the prior 12.5, this was enough to green sticker it. And if you'd gotten a Canadian import, it would of been a greenie, something with the 8th digit in the VIN being a "W" give it the "green light". Now as for the throttle stop, once it was unable to comply, they should of done away with all that crap, I agree!

Because the red sticker is only a Cali thing. In the other 49 states, it's required to meet the Federal emmisions standards, which means the lucky folks just over the border from the socialist state of Ca can add the right bits and get a plate, or ride year around. It would be cost prohibitive for Yamaha to develop a Cali only WR with the YZ stop, no grey wire, and YZ jetting.

Until '06 when the Federal standard will be adjusted to be the same as CA.

Unfortunatly the treehuggers on the left coast always shove their BS regulations down the rest of our throats.

I talked to the Yamaha USA corporate lawyer about this issue a while back. He said they are working on the problem at the federal level. The greenies have been stalling the process. It sucks.:devil:

Thats right... I live in Carson City, NV... I am about a 30 minute drive to Cali and I can get an out of state sticker for my 04 WR and ride all year anywhere... kinda funny that folks from out of state do not have to worry about the green/red thing....

I live part time in Cali and part in AZ. I don't have my 03 reg'd in either state. Can I get an outa state sticker and be ok to ride as long as I show my AZ ID? Those stickers are only $20 right?

Red stickers don't really have anything to do with emmissions. The YFZ 450 (quad) has the same engine as the WR450 and it got a green sticker. Green stickers were supposed to encourage the industry to start building 4stroke offroad bikes. Well, they did... but nothing changed. The real reason we have all of these red stickered bikes is because of liability. This is an exerpt from the CARB website:

Manufacturers of off-road motorcycles and ATVs must ensure that their vehicles conform to the appropriate emission levels for a period of 5 years or 10,000 km (whichever occurs first). If the vehicles are found to be in violation of the standards, manufacturers will be responsible for the repair of the vehicle at no cost to the consumer.

You can see it at: http://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/offroad/mcfactst.htm

CARB wants to intimidate manufacturers into red stickers. That way, they can tell the tree huggers they are actually doing something. It is an example of a government beauracracy trying to perpetuate its own existance.

I hate California.
