I want a 450 but

I really want a YZ450F because of its known reliability, but I hate the 4 speed transmission. I was wandering if there is any way to make it a 5 speed, and if so how much would it cost?????

Yep buy a WR450 for the 10thousanth time! option 2 some folks have added 5th gear from the WR tranny - For MX 4speed is better than five on this bike.

You can make a YZ450F a 5spd by either buying a COMPLETE WR450 transmission (10 gears, 2 shafts, shift cam, 3 forks, etc.) for about $750, and drop it in, OR buy a COMPLETE YZ426 trans for about the same money and do a lot of machine work and fitting.

But, have you ever ridden a YZ450? I went 2 teeth smaller on the rear, so that low gear is nearly identical to a 426, and 4th is a little over half way between a 426's 4th and 5th. With this gearing, it has a thoeretical (on paper, no correction for tire slip) top speed of 94 mph on the rev limiter, and yes it can run right up against the RL in high gear. We fooled around with gearing one day and ran the entire Glen Helen REM track in one gear, just for the hell of it. Why do you want 5?

i guess i just thought top speed wouldn't be that great on a 4 speed, so gearing it down would just take the top speed down even more, but if yours goes 94 geared down than I don't need a 5 speed  thanks a lot

Try the 4 speed first it's awesome, i was concerned about the yzf only having 4 gears when i bought it but now would only buy a 4 speed 450

how about converting it to a supermoto ride?

is 4speed enough?

Depending on the track, your gearing should change to suit the max top speed you want... then, you just ride it within the 4 gears, based on the peak speed...

Of course, track testing will give you the chance to fine-tune your setup...

Good luck,

David

The logic with the WR 5 speed is not to be able to go "94mph before you hit the rev limiter" It is to be able to loaf along at 65-70 mph in a sand wash, and still be able to hop around single tracks without getting a cramp in your hand from using the clutch. I have a 5.0 5 speed in my '85 Thunderbird Turbo-Coupe. 5th gear in the 'bird will tach out at about 150 mph. Do I drive 150 mph? never been there, but I can cruise at 70mph and still get 24 mpg at 2200 Rpm. The object of the 5 speed is not to go faster..the 4speed will get up and go..but who wants to be on the rev-limiter burning up that sweet motor?

exactly

i would like to be lugging the engine at 60mph, not bumping the rev limiter. my 426 does fine with tall gearing.
