No Spark

Could I connect a multimeter to the orange wire and earth to frame to test the voltage output while I kick? Should I get about 6 Volts.

it will be a pulsing voltage. Pulsing for every compression stroke. Multimeters measure the average voltage, so 6v sounds reasonable. If I get a change I'll measure mine tomorrow.

I've tested all wires direct from the the magneto while kicking with a multimeter but none of them show any voltage output. Does anyone have any further ideas? I've been working on several problems with my bike for about a month now and I just want to get up-an-running :thumbsup::devil::D:awww::lol:

Could I have burnt the magneto out by kicking Continuously :thumbsup:

continuity is measuring for a short. like measuring a piece of wire at one end and measuring it at the other. just go get a new coil. did you try the screwdriver trick?

you are wasting your time measuring anything when you kick unless you have another bike to compare it to sitting right next to you. Take it to a dealer. It cost me 50 bucks to have mine fixed.

I don't need to try the screwdriver trick as I have tested with the thick wire that comes from the Coil. I do not want to buy a new coil based on the fact that I have now voltage output from the magneto.

Am I wrong?

it is hard to know really what you have done since WE are not there.

The last time I took my bike to a shop It cost me £300+ to get a slide plate fitted with the rubber seal installed the wrong way round. What do you mean by "it is hard to know we r not there"? I think I have provided all relevant information or is this not the case. I would rather try and fix it with the knowledge shared by the people that use this forum ( is that not what it is for).

Ok, first off it is true that a Digital Volt Meter does display RMS voltage which is kind of an average. It is actually a percentage of the peak to peak voltage that is being created. But, if the votlage is generated quickly and then dissapated quickly, most DVM's are not going to register the voltage. You need to use an Analog meter, or get a DVM that has a min/max setting so that it can capture the minimum or maximum voltage levels. The display will not update fast enough to see voltages when you are kicking it. As for what voltage you should have where, you should be able to find all of that information in your Yamaha Shop Manual that came with the bike. Hope this helps,

I've been away for the past week and have not had chance to test further yet.

I will look in the manual again to see if it makes any more sense to me :thumbsup:

I have carried-out all resistance tests as per the manual. The Ignition coil inspection (Orange lead black lead) gave me an output of 0.00 which is out of the range 0.20~0.30. My multimeter has possible settings of 200, 2000, 20K, 200K and 2000K. 20K is the position that I used while testing as this seemed like the logical setting.

Can you guys confirm that I am doing this correctly and that my coil is faulty based on the 0.00 reading :thumbsup:

All other tests results were within the specified ranges.

use the 200 ohm range, it's best for the low resistance you're looking at....

I've put it on 200Ohm range and got an output of 00.9

As the range is between 0.20~0.30 I guess this is out of range?

Probably not...these numbers are ballpark and I've seen quite a bit of variation from the manual #s...did you check lead resistance? There's prob'ly .5 ohm or more just in the leads. Touch the tips together and see what they measure, then subtract that from your coil resistance...when you're measuring resistance this low, it makes a big difference.

I have replaced the coil and guess what: still no spark :thumbsup:

Check your CDI unit. I think it is time for a new one.

I heard that CDI units are really expensive :thumbsup:

How do I confirm that the CDI is at fault. I do not have access to another one to test.

I did all tests (as per the manual) and they all checked-out ok :thumbsup:
