YZ450 Drag racing a street bike! Need some tips!

I have an 04' YZ450 stock. My buddy just bought a new Yamaha FZ600 and we have a bet going. I belive I can kill his bike in a short distance drag race, like 1/8 mile or 0-60. He doesn't think so.

Does anyone have any opions on which bike would win such a race?

I have a stock 48 tooth sprocket and a aftermarket 40 tooth sprocket. My plan is to use the 48 sprocket and take off in 2nd gear off the line.

Does anyone have any other tips that won't cost me alot of money so that I can win this drag race?

air filter. on pavement? possibley stall in 2nd. just curious, what kind of riding with a 40 tooth

id do a rolling start if he will go for that. i dont know if youve rode the 450 on the street, which is where i assume the race will be, but its a monster. you cannot open it all the way up without it wanting to flip, especially in 1st and 2nd. i think you would have a chance if you could get the power to the ground....just tell him you want to race on a dirt rode.....and then use 2nd to start.....

The race will be on pavement, he knows he would have no chance on any other surface.

I ride on the street alot more than I should mostly riding wheelies, people really seem to get a kick out of it,but its wearing my back tire alot.

I weigh about 155lbs, with the 48 tooth sprocket the bike will stand up in every gear, even 4th, just by giving it gas and top speed est. 70mph+ maybe more

With the 40 tooth its like I lose 1st gear and gain 5th gear compared to stock. It stands up in 3rd no problem, but I would have to help it ride a wheelie in 4th. top speed est 85mph aleast! no joke this is a powerfull bike.

Keeping the front end down will be a problem if I take of in 1st gear with the 48, but I want to use the 48 because with it on the bike is as fast as I can change the gears. I spend a lil bit more time in each gear using the 40 tooth. This is going to be a short distance race so I what to top out fast.

Stick with the 48. Try your starts in 2nd and 1st. See which is faster. Then there is not much you can do for cheap mod's. A airfilter and a new slip on really help a lot. If you get the slip on. Go with the White brothers E-series pro meg. :thumbsup:

are you referring to the new FZ6 Fazer? or the long since obsolete FZ600 circa 1987?

Hey thanks for the advice guys. Thanks 426onNOS I'll look into the new slip. I got some time to practice my take off in 1st and in 2nd, need to get someone to time me.

JYD his bike is a new FZ6 Yamaha 600cc "naked bike" its a tone down version of the R6. ( woooo im scared ) lol.

Got any more advice anybody? What are some mods I could do in the $500 price range???

Man, I have my doubts that you can beat a sport bike, even short distance. He'll be doing 60+ in 2nd gear. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks man! Go to the "general forum" and tell those clowns what you think. ( i got this same subject in there too ) I will let you know how it turns out and if I can get my father to take some pics I will post them on here.

I don't think I could bet him in a 1/4 mile race because my bike tops out in just a few seconds and he would be gaining speed. Its going to be like 1/8 mile or maybe less. Im going to see what distance my bike reaches its top speed. :thumbsup:

What are you going to use for a tire?I have a '00 426 with 17 inch supermoto setup and a 40 tooth rear sprocket. even though my bike still has some low speed glitches. I recently wasted some suzuki 600 or 750 sport some thing on the street. 3 blocks ,It was ugly. He did not want a rematch at the next light. this is still a new bike to me and I am not that fast off the line. That was fun.

I'd only recomend that tall of a gear if you have a short tire like I do 160/60/17 vs. stock dirt size. I'd think you would get squirmy compromised traction with some wide open treadblocks? I may be wrong,never rode any dirt setup on pavement.

My street CRF450 hangs with my buddies TL1000R up to 100mph with 15/39 gearing. Its much easier to launch with tall gearing. I would recommend starting out in 4th with your sprocket setup.

I would say practice your starts in 2nd and 3rd...practice smooth clutch release as its key to a good start on asphalt, and sit way forward to help keep the front end down. My 426 spanks my friends CBR 900 for less than an 1/8th of a mile with 15/47 gearing(good for about 92 MPH or so), then he would go screaming by. :thumbsup:

I have both street bikes and I just sold my 450. Your going to lose. They are fast, but when street bikes are launched properly they are unbeatable.

My 450f was only a little faster when dragging (on dirt) against my 04 Yz250f. My 01 Yz250F with a 280 kit is also right in the mix. The 450 pulls away in higher gears, and has much better passing speed. My Zx12 will do 0-60 in around 3 seconds when launched right. I have owned many 600's in the past and 0-60 they are still real fast.

I alos have a problem with you getting good traction or too good.

I'd love to see this one, as it's the mix of my two favorite worlds. I own an FZ1 and 2 YZ400f's. I think if the street rider does it correctly and launches with the front tire about 4-6 inches off the ground and holds it there through second, you're done without a chance. But like most bike races and challenges, it's going to be up to the riders. The 450 is fast (I've ridden a friend's), lots of torque (maybe too much for the high traction of the street) so your biggest problem will be keeping the front end out of the stratosphere. The FZ6 is nothing to laugh off, even though it's not a full blown R6, it's still pumping out 90 horsepower and fuel injection to boot. Anybody going to record this one so we can all watch it?? Back in 1985 Dirt Bike (I believe) put a CR500 with a slick tire against a VFR500 interceptor on the drag strip. The CR won each time, but the VFR was just catching up to it as it crossed the line. The street rods have come a LONG time since then, and the 450's are probably putting out close to the same horsepower the CR500 was back then. That's why I say it's going to be up to the rider.

where did you guys get your 40 tooth rear sprockets? ive only been able to find just a few teeth less than stock for my '00 yz426. thanks for the help.

Lets not forget that the street bikes (600's) can touch over 70 in first. Not a lot of reason to shift. I do not know that model's exact speed, but I'm sure it probably will not need to shift. My ZX12 will do 101 in first.

But I agree depends on the rider.

Im sure my dad will want to record it. I just hope you all don't see it on some show like "Maximum Exposure" LOL

I feel better hearing some of you say it will depend alot on the rider. I have about 10years on dirtbikes ( riding when I was REAL young but went a couple of years without a bike before I got the 450) and I owned a 97'honda nighthawk 750 for about 6 months.

He has less than 6 months on any kind of motorcyle. And has only had his FZ6 for a couple of weeks. I have had my new YZ450 since march and feel very comfortable on it. :thumbsup:
