Primary Drive Sprocket

Primary Drive makes sprockets for the XR.

They make a few different flavors.

One, the steel model, claims to be made to/and/or above OEM specs.

I'm not worried about the 2 or 3 pounds difference going to aluminum or composite.

Anyone used or know anything about "Primary Drive"? The claim is this:

· All front and rear sprockets are manufactured to O.E.M., specs using

high grade hardened steel

· All match original equipment exactly for perfect fit and size

For the price, it seems like it can't be beat...

I wanted to add, that one of my fellow riders just emailed me, and said hardened steel on the countershaft was a bad idea, because it would cause my splines on my copuntershaft to possibly wear out prematurely.....

Case hardened steel won't cause the countershaft to wear incorrectly, improper or poor machining of the c/s sprocket will. If the steel isn't hardened, it wouldn't be able to stand up to the loads or forces exerted by both the c/s and the chain.

The c/s sprockets for the XRL are the same ones used on the old XR600R.

I've been using a 14-tooth, case hardened c/s sprocket from Sprocket Specialists that I got from Baja Designs ($18) and the c/s shows no signs of abnormal wear. It fits as good as the stock 15-t and I have no problems swapping back and forth between the two regularly.

I have Primary Drive on my 400 and on the rear of my 650. I have had the rear on the 650 for over 7 months. It's showing some wear but not bad. For the money you can't go wrong with Primary Drive. If they made a 13T for the front I would buy it also but I didn't see one so I went with the Ironman. :thumbsup:

Keep an eye on some of the after market primary drive sprockets. Some are not as thick as the honda ones and my friend used one on his to save some money and it started to rub on the frame just where the chain starts to travel back to the rear sprocket. He was lucky he stopped to check things after a short distance. The thiner sprocket pulls out farther when tightend, which puts it closer to the frame. Has anyone ran into this problem yet. Iggy

Did he have a problem with Primary Drive or an after market sprocket in general? I ran into a problem with my front Ironman where they got a bad batch and the retainer would line up with the splines. So there was nothing holding the sprocket on the shaft. But even with it being able to slide on and off except for the chain keeping it from coming all the way off it had barely gotten to the frame. Ironman is sending me another retaining clip to fix my problem.

Sprocket life depends on lots of variables.Mud/rain riding,hard acceleration,chain adjustment,ect... .They will last much longer if you buy a good "o"ring chain.About 2 to 3 thousand miles is what i got on my last three L's.Always replace sprockets/chains as a set. :thumbsup:
