chain/sprocket

I just wanted to see what most of you guys run for chains and sprockets. I had an AFAM sprocket and a 520 ert chain and they are both worn, in one season. Is this pretty normal or what? Also do yout think that a steel sprocket may last a little longer compared to an aluminum one?

Steel sprockets definately last longer than aluminum. I have been using Sprocket Specialists stuff for a few years, and they have held up pretty good. You can't beat the price either.

Nothing wears out a sprocket faster than a stretched out chain. It puts more of the load on fewer teeth.

So IMO you can buy whatever sprockets you want, Al, steel, stainless, whatever, a good chain is what will make any of them last longer. I think you should always replace everything as a set. I usually run an Al rear and a steel front with a quality O-Ring chain, I probably have 60 to 80 hours on my last set and it still looks too good to replace.

I really haven't run anything other than Regina Gold O-Ring chains in a long time. I only remember being irritated by the master link of the last DID O-Ring I had. I don't even know if your ERT was an O-Ring or not, I may even be wrong in assuming it is a DID chain...

Ditto what Hick says about stretched chains wearing out sprockets faster. I've fallen in love with the DID ERV-2 x-ring chain but there are other good choices too. If you want durability from the sprockets go with steel. They even have stainless steel which they claim will outlast steel, but I don't have any info to compare stainless to regular steel.

Dont know how it will last...Its an anodized aluminum center riveted to a black steel tooth ring. Its a little heavier than my stock aluminum sprocket but it should last like a regular steel sprocket.

Stock YZ is Al, WR 50 tooth is steel.

FOR TRACKS KEEP THE STOCK 14 FRONT AND GO UP 1 TOOTH ON THE REAR TO A 50

RENTHAL SPROCKETS ARE ALUMINUM AND A GOOD ERT 520 DID GOLD CHAIN WILL KEEP IT GOOD.

IM RUNNIN THIS AFTER RUNNIN STOCK STUFF AND A LOT QUICKER AND RESPONSIVE OUT OF CORNERS

I got the DID o-ring with the Sprocket Specialist's aluminum sprockets and it seems to work great.

The bike I just bought my little bro has all renthal stuff, typical teenager's bike. They like the name. ?

I'll second the iron man sprocket. I have completely worn out a high end, non o-ring, chain and the teeth still look almost brand new. It supposedly weighs only 4 oz more than aluminum. If I'd have put on an o-ring, the combo would have been the last combo ever on my bike.

Definitly worth a try.

Ive got a sprocket specialist rear now, had to change out the buttery soft Renthal. I swapped the renthal before it took my chain with it. The sprocket spec. piece seems to be wearing much much better than the Renthal did. When I replace the chain, Im going to get an DID ERT, I think. Im kinda all over the place on that. When I was a young guy, I ran Diamond chains, they wear like iron, but I havent seen them advertised anywhere. I found a website, but it was a Diamond factory site and retail was the deal. The tensile strength is what your looking for. Ya want it about 8700 or more. Which is the very best DID, and Diamond offers a 9300 in an o-ring, I believe. Thats what Ive been leaning toward. The Diamond.

Stay tuned for results on the sprocket specialties Titan sprocket. My parts guy said when they introduced the titan (aluminum w/hard anodized coating) they vendor offered him to scratch it with a nail. He said it was very hard to mar. At $50ish dollars I told him to order one.

I bought the 520 ERT and it's a pile of dung. After about 7 rides, it's toast. I'm going to try the Renthal unlite on front, the titan on the rear and a did x-ring on the back.

No question - DID x-ring chain from Rocky Mountain for $70. Mine has 70 hours and is still going strong. The only adjustments have been when I've changed tires or took suspension off..
