Is this bike right for me?

8 posts in this topic

ok iam 17, 5,11 and i wiegh about 165. I am fairly new to riding( about 4 times or so). I ride mostly trails. I went riding the other day and i have a old 250 4 stroke honda. my friend brought his i 99' 400. I rode that a little and i really liked the power it had over the 250. i am just wondering if this bike is gonna be too much 4 me. I was thinking about the yzf250 but i really want the 426.

I would recommend passing on the 400 or 426 for a beginner in the woods, if you like Yamahas the YZ/WR 250 would be a much better choice. The KDX200/220 is a very nice woods bike that can hold it's own on a track and they are reasonably priced. If the XR250 didn't have enough power for you but you liked the bike you could also look at the XR400.

Only riding 4 times I would stick with the bike you have for a while. Then upgrade to a 250F. A 426 is way too much for a newbie.

summary: 165lb novice + 426cc bike + trails = hospital

if this is what your trails look like (warning ~52MB!)

http://www.troop55.com/awesome.wmv

then you might want to think about a smaller bike.

ps

note that the yamaha 250F's are significantly lighter and much more powerful than the honda XR250's. moreover, the yamahas have a much better stock suspension. a more direct comparision with the yamaha 250F's is the honda CRF250's

pps

if i were in your shoes i look for a used '01 YZ250F. if you can find one in good shape (not raced), you can put $115 worth of '03 cam in it, a set of barkbusters , and be trail ready. remember, this is your first bike, not your last bike, so you don't have to go crazy buying a shiny new bike. learn the techniques of riding and then figure out where you want to go next.

wow those trails are nothing like the ones i ride. The trails that i ride are mostly open desert. the only reason i dont want to get a 250f is because i dont want to outgrow the power, if thats possible.
