backfire sreen???????????????

do you run one?

have you had any problems not running one?

jeff :)

No

and

No

:)

Yes, I run one. Even Team Honda uses the stock backfire screen from what I know. I've tried running with and without the screen and don't notice a difference in performance, but I've never seen dyno results to know for sure if there is a performance difference, but I suspect its only tiny if anything at all. Opening the side cover is a different story and produces a definite gain in performance that can be demonstrated on any dyno.

I've known people who have had problems where they've melted their plastic and or warmed their leg up real good. Just talk to Eric Foster who designed & maintains the Pig Pen web site www.xr650r.us as he has personal experience in this area :)

I don't since I got the Uni, but it's been "caramelized" on the back from a few backfires. Since Qadsan approves, I'm gonna start running it. I suspect the burnt areas are more restrictive than the screen ?

My guess is the chance of a backfire is pretty small and most people would probably never experience a problem running without the screen, but check out this article for more info...

How the Honda Off-Road Team builds Baja bikes 10.27.2003

"An HRC Power-Up Kit (available through all Honda Dealers, Part Number 06130-NLB-010) is the star of this show, but many times the team will elect to use only a portion of the kit. The kit’s heavy-duty clutch springs, cam chain (plus corresponding sprockets and tensioner), high-performance cam and appropriate jetting (as well as additional breather holes in the airbox cover—though the stock filter and backfire screen are retained) are used for all events ."

Edit:

This same subject has just come up on the CRF450 forum. Here's what Rich of DRN had to say...

jeff :)

I run the XRs only screen which basically is a 1/16th inch piece of metal with 3/16 holes drilled in it. Has worked so far.

Holy Smokes :)

Most people will probably never have that happen, but it's never an issue until it happens to you :D. For me, I'm not rolling the dice on this issue since I don't feel it makes much if any difference in terms of performance with or without the screen. Besides, my backfire screen has the PC racing seal on it.

When I fload my bike I hold the throtle full as I start it. It sucks the flame awy from the filter. Once the gas cought on fire do you think a screen would of stopped it? When Jay and I rode out at Yucca two weeks ago he laid it down on a steep hill for awhile and it filled the air box with fuel. We took the air filter out for awhile as he rested and when it looked dry and it was time to go he held the throtle open as he started it and all was well.

No but I'm going to start after seeing the picture

Qadsan, what brand air filter do you run. I use the UNI and the metal frame it comes with, but am going to switch to something else and use the back fire screen. My bike does b/F on rare occasions

i dont know if the screen would of stopped the gas from burning - but i do know i am glad i have holes drilled in the side cover - i saw the fire coming out the cover and pulled the filter out real quick like :D

looking back at what happened - we were riding out at ocotillo and decided to run over to the salton sea - riding up on the beach about 100 yards from the water we stopped and leaned are bikes together

o.jpg

we walked down to the shore line to see all the dead fish -

it was blowing pretty good out there on saturday - and it blew the bikes over

P4171178.jpg

bikes were on there side for about 10 minutes - should of pulled the filter out and checked it :) next time :D

what really sucked was we were about 15 miles from camp - and in the middle of a sand storm - i didnt want to run the bike with no filter so i pulled the strap out and my buddy pulled me back to camp :D

jeff :D

I usually use Uni with the metal frame or the stock filter, but I also have a White Brothers filter I like too. Most any brand of filter should work well as long as you're not getting dust / dirt into the clean side of the airbox. I really don't think there's much of a performance difference in terms of horsepower between most filters for a stock uncorked XR650R. For the super moto guys, the K&N may offer some HP advantage (especially at higher engine RPM), but its not a filter I'd choose to run in the dirt / sand full time unless I was running their outwear filter skin.

just my two pesos worth on filters:

No Toil is my favorite. I use the Barnum screen.

I didn't know Barnum had a screen too. Is it a screen or a drilled plate or???

Man we missed you out there! Me 'n ThumpDaddy were out at the Sea too. Coming back with that headwind was... uh, interesting to say the least!

Looks like you got a "Cajon Style Blackened Filter Fish" there! :D:):D

its a heavy duty screen-works great.

Qadsan,

Where did you get the PC racing seal for the pig? I have one on my CRF450 and love it. Would like to get one for the piggy. Let me know please.

As for the wind last Saturday - I am still pulling boulders out of my eyes! :)
