red hot pipe....whats up

I've got a '01 426 that wouldn't start this spring so I cleaned up the pilot jet, put in a new plug and it fired right up. The problem is that in the time it took to tighten the gas tank bolts, the first 6 to 8 inches of the exhaust pipe comming from the head were glowing red hot. Whats up with that?

Normal, Normal, Normal......

Really noticable at night. Typical question for those new to the four stroke world. :)

Nothing to worry about.

We need a banner ad on top of the forum that says "red headers are OK". :D Seriously, it's normal. :)

It is never a good idea to let these bikes idle for very long. The engine generates a tremendious amount of heat. The heat is somewhat dissipated by air moving around the header, just like the old air cooled engines did with the fins cut in the cylinder head.

BTW, it pretty much freaks everybody out when they first see it...lol

Use the damn search function........the question has only been asked a zilliopn times..... :)

it was a trip the first time i saw mine but, i've changed to titanium and haven't seen it at night yet... anyone know if the titanium headers glow red?

I guess it must of been the first time I've started it at night, it freaked me out, I thought the damn thing was going to melt. It is my first 4 stroke, maybe i'm a little parinoid. Sorry to bother you AZ, I couldn't find anything in the search.

You might set the search for "all posts" and instead of "exact phrase" use "and."

I did that using your exact subject line "red hot pipe" and found pages of threads.

But then again, no worries. I post now and then without searching just because I don't feel like sifting through a bunch of posts or don't really know the right search terms.
