Loose gears behind clutch hub???

2 posts in this topic

Hey guys, what is anyones take on how loose or how much play the gears behind the clutch hub should be. The bike in question is a 98 400F.

I am talking specifically about two gears that are both driven by the small gear on the back of the clutch basket:

1) the gear that is located between the little one on the back of the clutch basket and the kick starter gear.

2) the gear that is located between the little one on the back of the clutch basket and the oil pump drive gear.

Both of these gears I have referenced are held on by c-clips and seem to have alot of play, is this normal??? I can't remember if there is a brass bushing pressed into these gears or not. Has anyone had to replace the bushings or gears themsleves due to excess play.

i dont know how much play they are supposed to have, but i do know theres a lot of play with those 2 gears on my 98.my water pump impeller shaft broke recently and when i took crankcase cover off to fix it,i was shocked at the amount of play between those gears.i inspected gears and bearings for wear and everything looked in great shape, but im still a little concerned.
