Non-ferrous chunks in bottom of case

Recommended Posts

In the middle of a top and bottom end rebuild, and found these chunks in the bottom of the right side case, next to and embedded in the oil strainer.. Anyone have any idea on what this might have been? What would you check next before finishing the rebuild? I'm sweating this at the moment; I expected small shavings, not huge chunks that have clearly one through the gears...ImageUploadedByThumper Talk1470977234.115269.jpgImageUploadedByThumper Talk1470977253.889517.jpgImageUploadedByThumper Talk1470977265.593144.jpgImageUploadedByThumper Talk1470977279.451803.jpgImageUploadedByThumper Talk1470977293.973394.jpgImageUploadedByThumper Talk1470977337.075946.jpg

Looks like a bearing outer that disenegrated...but you said it was non ferrous ?

Ok, thank you for the replies. I have a new strainer on the way. I will pull apart the oil pump next and check for any missing aluminum parts. Gray, you mentioned flushing the frame reservoir would be difficult... I have the filter and pipe out already, should I just keep pouring oil down the dipstick opening until it's clear? Is there some sort of pump I could use?

Should be pretty obvious when the cases are apart. Looks like some of the chunks went through the transmission. Could it be part of the piston skirt, or maybe a chunk of the engine cases?

I thought it would be obvious too; I don't see anything missing from the cases, piston is in tact (but shot)... The woodruff key (ferrous, thanks for the correction grayracer) makes sense but the aluminum chunks have me scratching my head...
