Any further riding impressions, Krannie ?

 

Is the YZ450FX the best woods bike for big guys or is there something better ?

 

The woods I've ridden on the FX are really more like the desert, but in the woods.

Not much feet on the floor obstacle work.

On Sunday my feet touched the ground 4 times, other than stopping. 

For that, and any flowing trail with some difficulty, this bike is fantastic.

 

For 'real' woods, the BETA is a more friendly, slimmer, less tiring, and all that.

 

If I could only pick one bike for everything, it would be a tough choice.

I should just get it welded on, but I can't find a welder who will do it on demand. It has to be on the bike to be lined up, and I'm not leaving my bike overnight at a welding shop...

You don't happen to be in Seattle, do you? Happy to weld it up for you gratis, any time.

 Came back down the hill to attempt to show another rider how to feather the clutch and stop digging trenches.

 

You can see it gets softer and steeper with ledges behind me....

Your comments come too late.  I just put the deposit down on my 450FX.  I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it. 

 

Have you adjusted the steering stops yet ?

FYI, I bought a used YZ450FX on the weekend.  9.4 hours, pretty much like new.

 

Is the 450FX peg mount different from previous mounts ?   I used an older YZ peg mount to replace the kick stand peg mount on my '250FX with no apparent issue.  Am I missing something on the 450FX ?

 

How much do you weigh and how are you liking the 0.54 and 6.3 springs on your FX ?  I'm running 0.48 and 6.2 on my 250FX and find the front too soft.  Though Monk claims I should be happy with the 0.48 on the '250FX.  I think it needs at least a 0.52, if not a 0.54. I'm leaning towards 0.54 for my '450FX.

  I did the same thing on my WR (2 years ago) and also on my '250FX.  You stated that you needed to order a left foot peg mount and that they were out of stock on them.  Are the 450FX mounts new that you needed to order them ?  Otherwise any recent YZ mount should work ?

I lowered the pegs by swapping them left to right, swaping the mounts left to right,  turning them upside down, then cutting in a new indexing hole, and relocating the peg's barrel.

Since you can't do that with the left FX integral mount because of the stand, I ordered a YZ mount instead.

How are the cut footpegs working out ?   Did you weld the collar back onto the peg or are you running them without the collar ? 

 

I'm thinking of cutting the collars off my Airtime (chinese) pegs.  Not sure if I should try to weld the collar back on or not.  I wonder if they are heat treated and if the welding would affect the heat treatment on the rest of the peg.  Thoughts ?

 

One thing about the Airtime pegs is that collar portion (that seats the spring) is a bit narrower than the stock peg.  Meaning the main part of the peg that the pin runs through is thicker.  I can provide measurement and pictures if anyone is interested.

When you stand on the peg, you put a torque on it.  The vertical load is handled by the bottom of the peg.   The torque is handled by the bore of the peg.   The bore used to be a) longer and B) the meat of the peg bore was at the top, where it had the most leverage.   Now the meat of the peg bore is at the bottom and the bore is 40% shorter than it was.  This dramatically increases the force on the peg bore.

Looked through your thread, and was wondering if you've mounted a plate yet? If so, what product did you use (or did you build it yourself), and do you have any pictures of it?

Too much on my plate at the moment to finish the plating hardware.

 

I  went with the Ryco Motosports  WR plate mounting kit, and have made my own harness, and my own lighting swtich,  mounted with the computer bracket.

Just received a new Ryco license plate holder in mail yesterday.  I say "new" because they just had a design change to them a week or so ago.  Totally different now and a better angle as to not get caught in your knobby upon bottoming rear end.  It is heavier though so I wonder about it on the flimsy 2016 oem rear fenders.

 

Anyone know of a sturdier after market rear fender for a 2016-17?  Acerbis?

The new Ryco license plate design for the WR450 is much better for staying out of the rear tire.  It has a flatter angle which makes the plate a little harder to read from behind but after 100 mile desert ride last week I can confirm that it stayed clear of my knobby (unlike the previous design).  H

 

Highly recommend it.  As I said before it is a little heavier and the OEM rear fenders are very floppy.  I just installed an Acerbic rear fender and it is indeed stiffer than poem so not as much floppiness.
