Dammit, it keeps truncating my post!

I am going to tip it over a lot, so durability is important. Don't care about cosmetic damage. (The XT has gone down at least 75 times since I bought it 2 months ago.)

I'd like to lower it a little bit, if that doesn't muck it up too badly. Sitting on the bike my toes barely touch, and I'd like a little bit more stability. But I *can* touch, so it's okay.

I weigh 192 and am losing weight, 5'10, if that matters to the discussion. Stumpy legs, long arms.

Single track here is a mix of:

woodsy tight turns with soft dirt & occasional tree falls and technical bits

highly exposed talc with loose shale (uuuuuuuuuugh)

some water crossings

Occasional quite steep bits

 

Lots of engine braking does not work for scary downhills. You loose rear wheel traction and can't regain it.

 

I almost always pull my clutch lever in on steep desents, using front and rear brakes.

Sorry for jacking your thread, BTW. I didn't realize there was a whole sub forum dedicated to "what bike should I buy".

To make up for it: here's the 3mm wrench I made today to adjust the valves on my XT.

Did you try riding it without the steering stabilizer ?  Is it necessary for non desert riding ?

 

What made you chose 105mm of sag on it ?

 

What gear were you in when you stalled it on the climbs ?

No. Yes, in all dirtbikes in rocky terrain.

I'm about to pull the pin on a YZ450FX.  

 

How much better is it than your "custom" WR450 and the Beta ?  Are there conditions, like tight woods where the Beta is better than the FX ?

 

Is there anything about the FX that is turning you off ?  Is the off idle stalling curable ?

How much better is it than your "custom" WR450 and the Beta ? 

The full-blown 2008 WR-to-YZ feels like a dinosaur compared to the FX.

It runs much better, less engine racket, better suspension, and much, much better build quality than any other Yamaha I have ever owned.

In everyway, the FX is better, accept two: the ergos are more compact, and the off idle torque is less.

Both can be fixed.

Are there conditions, like tight woods where the Beta is better than the FX ?

The BETA is better on the very tightest, steepest terrain......but it has a much more 'reserved' power delivery, even with a pipe and remap.

The BETA turns much tighter. The FX needs to have it's steering stops modified to be truley woods worthy (which I will do).

The BETA is very, very civlilized to ride. Smooth, compliant, flat power.

The Yamaha is more fun, but it tires you out when you use all that 'fun', and it's much less compliant in the ride. I don't mean the suspension, I mean the overall flex of the bike.

The Yamaha has more power everywhere, and the suspension is world class.  You can cross ruts at speed and it's no big deal. On the BETA or on a KTM you had better hold on tight...

It doesn't have an off idle stalling problem.

It has the same problem just about any modern FI bike has, and that is the power is kind of delivered in a 'crude' state. You have to fine tune it. 

The Yamaha intake honk is annoying, as is the limited gas tank options.

There is an IMS 2.5gal tank coming that requires no modifications.

The intake honk can be lessended with some Dynamat and some earplugs.

I've got the new ECU. The mapper is sitting in my Amazon cart while I add more stuff. 

Exhaust tip - do you have a specific one? Can I just take out the restrictor and be done with it?  

Gearing - shorter or taller? 

Ergos - I may lower it (using a rear shock spacer and sliding the front forks up a bit). I have a Scott's on the way (with the risers). 

Handguards - going on tomorrow. 

Tires - I have Dunlop 606s on there now. Thinking about tubliss. 

 

I might go with a Rekluse - it's tempting. 

Going to add USB charging to the front, also fab up a custom dash plate (on my waterjet) to put that into along with the GPS & InReach

I don't seem to have the restrictor thingy that I thought some people have removed from their air box. 

Would like a bigger tank that doesn't have saggy wings 

Enduro Engineering bash plate is on the way. 

Shoai battery is on the way. 

Likely going to re-pad the seat with something shorter.

Just ride more and stop using your legs as outriggers.

 

Dunlop 606 tires are borderline dangerous on dirt. 

Kenda makes several good DOT tires.

 

Don't waste you money on a Rekluse, unless you are racing, or have left hand issues.

You will be a much better rider if you learn to modulate the clutch at any rpm or load, not just the one that Rekluse gives you...

Practice locally on a small hill to get the clutch to just barely slip as you climb slowly. You will figure it out.

After a good day of hard riding I've decided I'm not going to lower it and I'm not going to get a Rekluse. I am, however, going to get a softer seat. 

 

I didn't find the Dunlops to be borderline dangerous. I was able to keep up (mostly) with the dudes I was riding with and I think that all of my dumps were self imposed. When I wear these out I'll look into the Kendas. 

Oh yeah - what about the exhaust insert? Remove or replace?

I removed the pea shooter. I think I'm going to fab myself a fatter bored, shorter internal (the part that sits inside the spark trap) replacement. 

 

Need to figure out if I want the soft or medium foam from Guts. 

Changes from 2015 to 2017 are pretty minor right? Big changes in 2007, and again 2015? I've seen a few 2015s going for cheap... Tempted.

FX is all new in 2016

You can get a '15 WR around here for $6500 otd...but the 1500 more is totally worth it.

Really? The 15 looks exactly the same as the 16 and 17 (within on top, graphics etc). The 15 also has 6 gears, radiator fan and so on. Pretty sure it also has the rearward slanted engine. What differences are there between a 15 and 16 or 17 WR?

So from 12-15 is when they got the new look, along with fuel injection? FX would have been my first choice, but remapped and uncorked, seems like the WR is the ame as the FX. FX is a bit lighter though... Is $6500 for a 250 or 450?

No  year WR450F has 6 speeds, sorry.

2016 is the 'reverse head' motor.

Don't forget the new KYB suspension on the 16s as well. Yamaha is dumping remaining stock on the 15s because they have extras. I heard from my deal that there's at least a $1200 rebate on them.

 

16s are now becoming rarer as the 17s take over.
