WR450 oil disappearing

I have an 06 wr450 that has been (from what i think) burning oil. The dipstick goes from full to half in 70 miles. The thing is, there is absolutely no blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and no oil drops below the bike. Im planning on doing a leakdown test to determine whats wrong, however, it is kinda pricy and i figured there might be some things to check for before doing a leakdown test.

You can borrow a leak down tester from Autozone for free, you just have to leave a deposit in case you don't return it.

You might drain the oil and measure it in a bottle against what you put in to be sure you are loosing it. There might be a difference in checking it hot or cold when you first put it in.

Ill change the oil and filter soon and go for a full tank ride to see if the oil drops but im pretty sure that i check it when its hot everytime (less than 20 seconds after i turn it off)

Thats cool, I didn't know that but i still have to get an air compressor from somewhere :/

You need to wait 1-3 minutes after shutting of the motor before checking the level.

You should check it as the exact same time each time, to be sure.

Your dip stick only registers that last 15% of your oil, so even if oil does not show up on your dipstick, you probably still have 85% left....

Ok so what you are saying is (if im right with measurements) im loosing around 7% of total oil in every 70 miles (tank). Thats not normal is it? Im really doubting the idea that there is something wrong with the piston rings or valve stem seals because the previous owner rebuilt the top end + got an athena big bore kit. I bought the bike with 14hrs of usage on the rebuilt engine. I have added around 1k miles to that.

You don't know that, you are assuming.

The only way to know is to measure the oil going in and going out.

I would try a more structured way of checking the level first.

THe most accurate way is as Krannie said, measure what you put in and then measure what is taken out during a oil change.

You can also do an oil change, ride the bike fifteen minutes and then check the dipstick. Then ride 70 miles and see if it is different.

 

Normal consumption of a non-racing engine is 1 liter or less over 1000 miles, on a racing engine, 1 liter in 400 miles is probably acceptable.

Both measurments where done after around 20 seconds of stopping the bike, how is that incossistent? Its just gonna show more on both tests

I'm trying to help, and you are arguing...

 

YOU MUST WAIT 1-3 MIN AFTER THE MOTOR HAS STOPPED  before checking the oil....

 

Do it the same way every time

Do it level

Measure you outake

 

Read your service manual on how to check your oil............maybe that will sink in better....

as Krannie suggested.....the very best way to do it is the drain all the oil and change filter exactly as suggested by the service manual.  Be sure to drain the oil tank in the frame and remove/clean/reinstall the copper/brass screen and get every bit of oil out that you can including in the oil feed tube.  Measure exactly how much you put in the bike.  I think it will take about 1.1-1.2 litres.

 

Run the bike for 70 miles.  Drain the oil again exactly as directed by the service manual (and exactly how you did it initially) and capture all the oil coming out.  Measure how much you get out.  This will tell  you exactly how much you are burning.  For example, let's say you put in 1.2 litres initially and then when you drain 70 miles later, you measure 1.1L coming out.  This will tell you that you are burning 0.1L every 70 miles. 

 

The key is consistency of process.  Measuring at the dipstick several minutes after shutoff maybe helpful but its not foolproof.

yeah im planning to do that. I went looking for an oil filter yesterday at local auto part stores but no one seems to have it :/

That doesnt surprise me.  I dont find that any auto parts stores around here carry motorcycle oil filters.  A yamaha dealer or a motorcycle parts specialist should have one.  And, of course, you can order them online.

 

Not to rub salt in the wound, but you need to make sure to get the Yamaha Service manual for your bike, so that you can review the entire oil change procedure.  I believe the '06 WR450F is the same as the '05 WR250F that I own and there are about 3 different drain plugs that need to be removed  to fully drain the oil from the crankcase and from the oil tank in the frame.
