I think you get the idea...

Looking for rims, can't find anything under $300. That's a third of what I paid for the bike and I'm not willing to put that down. What's a decent rim that I can replace this one with? It's an Alex MD19. Came off a GT Karakoram. I'm pretty pissed off how easily I broke my $1000 bike... Sorry if I'm coming across rude.

Thanks guys.

Pinkbike is a great option, but if you want to go new, this would be a solid wheel (just short of dh) so you shouldn't damage it.

Lots of online retailers should have similar deals

Yes that's what I am looking for... Actually exactly the one I was looking at, or maybe a 51 vs 31... Anyway close enough. Any chance you know any Canadian retailers? Duties kill.

Also I'm feeling good so I'll share what happened.

It was my first time on a mtb all year, having been on my dirt bike 3 times already. I was lining up for a way too big whip off a way too small jump due to the change in weight from mx to mtb. Anyway landed front heavy quarter sideways. I guess that most rims would have bent like that.

Anyway some Canadian retailers would be great. Thanks.

Bam, http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1949976/

For the price, you won't find anything better.

Honestly, $500 is around a mid level wheelset. Close to $1000 or so is top of the line. Much past $1200 and you're in dentist territory.

Local pickup only... It's on the other side of Canada? do you know of any mainstream online bicycle stores based in Canada? Kinda like Rocky Mountain or Motorsport? Thanks!

Edit:

Found one that looks reliable... Even if it looks like it was made in the 90's lmao. Let me know what you think.

Both are good rims, I personally run the subrosa, but they're a bit much for most people's usage.

The downside is, that you'd then have to rebuild the wheel. Likely need new spokes, I think most shops charge around $2 a pop. So you're looking at 150 or more for a single wheel. And a fair bit of effort especially if your front hub isn't great (honestly no idea on your setup, just a general consensus of quick release hubs). I strongly suggest finding a used wheel. You'll get much more for your money.

My original rim weighs under 500grams so I'm assuming the hubs pretty good... All my spokes were fine, and I thought is should lace right up, no?

My hub is, well to be honest I have no clue... Logo looks very familiar though, maybe you know better than I?

Maybe a Scott logo?

Thanks, I really appreciate the help

The weight isn't a very good scale of the quality of a rim. And sadly, no, it likely won't lace up unless you luck out and it has the same ERD (not really sure what it stands for) and hole offset. Then you have to go about saving the spokes and nipples, which can be a lot of work if you have aluminum nipples and they start to round off.

Not really sure on the brand, doesn't look like scott. What brand is the bike?

It's a GT Karakoram. There were 3 levels, and I got the middle one. I'll try and figure out what the ERD's are...

Thanks!

So, my hubs are "All Terra" basically rebranded Salsa Mukluks, if that means anything to you.

Also, the ERD (effective rim diameter btw) is 604 on my Alex MD19's... Would going to a 599 really cause that much trouble? It's 5 mm which means 2.5 mm on either side of the rim... I don't see that causing a major problem with my existing spokes.

Also, I think I like the WTB's better, so I picked out a few...

2.5mm doesn't sound like much, but there's only a few mm of threads on each spoke. And having to add threads sucks if you have to tool, and will put you to a stop if don't.

And wtb makes quality rims. You pretty much have them ordered from best to worst. ST will be stronger than frequency, but frequencies are lighter. So it's up to you.

The ST (I believe) has an ERD of 603 vs 599 which is a negligible difference for sure... I'll probably go with those if that's the case. (Every night around this time I can't get on the website)

Thanks for all your help!
