Anyone pick up a 450FX yet?

Too late, I already do.  I took each of my 3 kids for a lap around the property yesterday, then took a lap for myself.  All it takes to go from mild to wild is to twist the right grip further and/or faster.  Insane power, but comes on smooth and steady if you want it to.  Suspension feels amazing.  My only complaints so far are the seat seems too grippy (hard to slide up) and the brakes seem a bit soft but I'm assuming they will get better as they break in.

Trust me the brakes are very good. Give them a few hours and that front brake is an easy one finger. If you weight above 180, you should consider going one more up on rear shock. I weight 190, with the spring was able to get perfect static sag. With the stock, I had just a touch more pre-load then I like.

Good to know, I'll keep that in mind.  I'm between 190-200 in street clothes.

You can find the spring fairly cheap because that's what the 2015 YZ450 is. Guys dumping them for a lighter spring that is in our FX. If you try to get your race sag around 105, you'll notice that your static is outside the preferred range. so it puts more preload on and the first part of the stroke can feel harsher. Break in the suspension, then look at your #. I'm sure you know this stuff, but it did make the rear feel better. Edited by RMK800

Got a stock 2014 spring I'd part with. Honestly I think the KYB springs suck because they're super inconsistent and progressive. A stiffer straight rate spring works real well on these chassis. Im 185lb or so and I run a 6.2kg spring on the back with minimal preload. Works awesome.

I do know the importance of setting the suspension up properly but this is the first I've heard someone dive into the details on the FX and provide some feedback, I truly appreciate it!  What's a good figure hour wise for break in time?  I was thinking at least 5 hours.

Seat mod on the IMS drybreak is irreversible. You basically have to cut 1-1.5in off the front of the seat...

 

Yes. I got the IMS 2.5 today and read the instructions. I don't think I'm going to use this tank. It is brand new with the screw cap adapter looking for a good home. I'm going with the 3 gallon POS instead.

Sounds like your spring rates are too soft...

 

So Monk I have to give credit where credit is due: I ended-up with .52 and 6.2 (actually 6.17) and a re-valved re-valve. I don't have any time on it yet but if it improves the .50/6.0 set-up I'll be very happy. I'm told even if the 250FX and 450FX were the same weight suspension would not likely be interchangeable. Thankfully there are people much smarter than I am to figure these things out. In fairness, the straight swap off the 250FX to the 450FX was better than stock but still not great. The boingers off the 250FX had been re-worked and performed incredibly well on the 250FX.

what about this tank do you not like? i have not researched them myself. i do not want the 3.0 because i believe it uses radiator fins to store fuel and would make the bike heavy. i wouldnt mind another .5 gallons but thats it! anymore and i would prefer to carry it on my person in my backpack.

i wish there was a way to store more fuel way down low in the frame but the exhaust makes that a no go.
