2005 WR450 Engine failure, parts compatibility?

12 posts in this topic

Locked up transmission, top end is still salvageable. I understand 2003-2006 are very similar. If I buy a bottom end out of another year, will the top end cooperate? There an 03 and 04 bottom end going for around $800 less the jug/head on FleaBay is why I ask. Secondly, if I do source just the used transmission shafts and gears, which years would I be limited to? Hunted through all the FAQ's and Wiki's I could find but am still a bit uncertain. Thanks everyone.

Why not split your bottom end and rebuild it? It would likely be much cheaper. Not sure what years interchange but I would buy new parts. Can't bear the thoughts of rebuilding with used parts. Just my thoughts.

I'd be buying a rack of gears as hard parts and replacing all the consumables IE: Bearings, gaskets, clips etc with new. OEM Gears and shafts gets out of hand pretty quickly. I'm going to evaluate the bike for purchase, entire engine is organized in boxes and doing some ROI estimations if it's viable to put it back together and end up on top or not. For ease of assembly, a used bottom end would be easiest pending price and availability. Second would be a a loose trans used, and a bearing kit and gaskets. Next pending how much is bad, is a few gears, shafts, etc as needed and consumables.

I have a 05 good lower end .

The timing jumped because the chain rub
block under the valve cover came off
and ended up between the timing chain and cam gears ......destroyed the head and piston .IMG3212_zpsd1d7954c.jpg

likely, only a gear or two are bad in your trans, so replacement wouldn't be too bad.  I would still split cases and evaluate before you buy anything, assuming you are capable.

Going to look at it Thursday, I have Still2Smokin's bottom end lined up pending purchase, if it all works out, I'll gladly sell you the extra cases to defray the overall cost.
