What is the single best mod you have done to your YZ?

2015 yz450f the single best thing.Bridge stone m59 front tire and 204 rear.There is a combo of things to make the bike really work for my son.

Tires as stated,suspension and rear link.

Rekluse and mx32 tires. Also redid the fork with springs for my weight and new oil. It ended up being so much easier and fun to ride.

WR 4th & 5th gears

 

I haven’t heard of anyone else doing this. What kind of riding do you do and what benefits did this give?

Desert, racing and recreational, 90%.

 

Speed.

 

The YZ450 is an MX bike with an MX style close ratio 5 speed designed to make certain you had the "right gear" no matter where you were.... on an MX track.  This means low gear is uncomfortably high in the nasty stuff, and 5th, well 5th is over with pretty fast in some places around here.  It's very uncomfortable to run the bike at 8000+ across a mile of lake bed, for example.

 

Low gear can be handled with a Rekluse , but you just can't gear high enough to make up for what you loose on top without making first gear just stupid, Rekluse or not.

 

But, 4th gear from a WR450 is the same ratio as was the 4th gear in the old MX 4 speed in '03-'05 was (higher than your 4th, but lower than your 5th), and 5th is well up over that, so what you end up with is that same old 4 speed, but with the big fat 5th gear you always looked for but never found.  Very cool.  I actually had to lower the gearing to from 13/48 to 13/50 make 5th more useful.  The bike now blissfully cruises graded roads at 60-65, and runs the lake beds at 80+ with great facility.

What year is your bike? Does this mod also apply to 14-15 yz's? If so what year wr would be the donor and what parts would be needed aside from the sets of gears?

From '13 up (or '14 and onward, if you want), I don't know; I haven't researched that.  However, even though the shift fork/shaft thing was completely reconfigured, a lot of the transmission parts are still the same. 

 

Look in the Common Threads topic, pinned at the top of the forum.  Under "transmissions", there are links to the current state of interchange info that we have for this.  If it stays the same as the '13, it would mean you'd need the 4 individual gears that make up the 4th and 5th pairs, plus the output shaft, all from an '07-'11 WR450.

Figuring out what tires work best and at what air pressure for certain terrain and temp; by FAR the best time and money spent on the bike.

Kenda Millville-2 120/100 run in the 'soft' direction (rear) @ 8lbs cold, and Bridgestone 90/100 403 run at 11lbs cold (front).

After that, suspension tuning. I like the wheels stuck to the ground even if it bottoms ocassionally, and I am not riding track so that is fine.

Everything else is just gravy.

I just installed Millville-2's front and rear and rode them 2 days ago. The rear is in the soft direction. Pretty happy with their performance, especially since it was only $117 for the set. I was closer to 12psi in the rear though.

Next on the list is most likely springs for my weight.
