WR450F '12+ (shock) spring dimensions

6 posts in this topic

I'm about to stiffen up my springs to match my obesity, but that is far from easy.

The local Austrian suspension shop I'm in contact with has sent me the wrong spring

(30 mm longer than stock) and wrong fork springs (20 mm longer than stock).

So I did some reseach:

KYB :

When I try to find a KYB shock spring they don't have one :jawdrop:

that has the stock 240 mm free length, with an ID of 60mm : see  page 175 in

http://www.technical-touch.com/fileadmin/sitecontent/pdf-files/Cataloog_2015__1_.pdf

With a lot of determination I cloud fit one of the 260mm springs.

Would have to fully back out the top spring seat for that.

Btw, above KYB catalog lists the 2012 WR450F fork as open cartridge, go figure. :banghead:

Eibach :

the Eibach Catalogue at

http://eibach.com/sites/dedevperformance-suspension.eibach.com/files/motorsport/ems-catalog.pdf

suggests spring type 892 for the shock.  However, 892 is 270mm long, exactly what the suspension

shop sent me at first attempt. 10mm longer than what one can squeeze onto the shock. :foul:

So, should any WR450F 2012+ rider happen to have his/her suspension off the bike please do measure

free length and ID and please post them here.  I'm on the brink of suspecting a modified suspension in

my used 2012.

thx

The 2015 KYB catalogue lists wr450f's from 2003 to 2015 as all using the same rear spring spec.

Edit: I have a standard 2012 rear spring in the workshop, i'll measure it tomorrow and post the sizes up.

This is a standard rear spring from a 2012 wr450f:

Rate 5.5, 60mm internal diameter and 242mm in length.

It was replaced by a KYB 6.0, 60mm ID, 260mm long spring.

Thx a lot for measuring, that is exactly what I've found in my bike, too.

No problem! It means the replacement spring is 'snug' when fitting. Even with the spring preload adjuster backed right off, you have to compress the new spring ever so slightly to get the lower seat back in place. Nothing too difficult!
