The 2015 WR250F weighed 258 pounds.  The 2016 YZ250FX weighs 249 pounds.  Ie, the WR lost 9 pounds going to the YZFX model.

 

The 2015 WR450F weighs 273 pounds.   The YZ450FX is going to lose about 10-11 pounds going to the YZ450FX model.  That puts it at 262-263 pounds.   Still a heavyweight pig.  And it still needs a skid plate.

 

My lightened WR450F weighs a bit over 250 pounds, full of fuel, with skid plate and bark busters.

My only question -- is since the current generation WR450 is already a quite capable mount ----  would a WR based on the YZF really bring anything new to the table?  

 

The WR is green sticker already and potentially more suitable for back woods roaming for a lot of people than a full tilt  YZF based machine aimed squarely at GNCC and WORCS racing

I rode an 09 YZF , (and a 2 stroke 250 in select eventS) until 2012 , then switched to CRF-X's for the last 2.5 years --- 

 

Love the blue bikes (or white or yellow )  ---  but i have heard that the tendency to climb out of a rut is still there   -  That was my main gripe with the blue machines, as the red and yellow bikes seem to have the handling down to a science

It all boils down to geometry.  Swap in a set of 22mm triple clamps and crank up the preload on the back end, maybe drop the TCs and its an entirely different beast.  KTMs run 20 and 22mm TCs, for the most part anyway.   Most Yamahas are 25mm.

No matter what the subject, you have to find a way to work in the weight of your stripped no e-start WR, don't you.

 

Try this on for size:

 

The 2015 YZ250FX is 16lbs heavier than the YZ250F

 

Therefore, the WET WEIGHT of 245 for the 2015 YZ450F, plus 16 lbs, would be about 261 for the FX. 

 

Guess what a KTM 450 XCF weighs wet?  253lbs.  So it's less than 8lbs heavier than a KTM. Most of that additional is in the kickstand and crank and transmission.

Weight, especially high on the bike, makes a huge difference in how they handle.  I've swapped back and forth between my bike and a stock WR450F and the difference is night and day.

 

Yamaha builds really well built, reliable, economical, powerful bikes.  But their off road bikes are unnecessarily heavy.  If you want a great Yamaha off road mount, build it yourself.  Its not hard and there are tons of parts available, OEM or aftermarket.

FYI, from what I've heard, the YZ250FX won't start without the battery.   The WR450F will.   I sincerely hope that the YZ450FX will start without a battery, just like the YZ and the WR do.

 

I'm not exactly sure what the YZ450FX would give you over a WR.  Of course the reverse cylinder engine will probably be a gem.  Other than that, its standard Yamaha fare. 

 

I'm not even sure where the weight loss is going to come from, other than simple things you could unbolt from a WR.  The new engine is probably somewhat lighter.  The frame is probably going to be a YZ250F variant, which is a couple pounds lighter.

 

A friend of a friend has a YZ250FX.  My friend has ridden it.  He says its nice, but not mind blowing.

      I understand that I'm going to sound like a complete rookie on this one. How do you tell if you have an aftermarket kit done to the front forks? I just recently pickup up an 05 yz450f and on one of the forks it has a (1) fast lap racing suspension sticker on 1 of the forks. The guy appeared to go alittle sticker happy with this thing before I got it. Runs good and the front end feels great but I've never had anything aftermarket suspension done to any of my other bikes. Any tell tale signs aside from the feel? Thanks.

      Hey all, let me get right to the point, basically for the past couple years I've had this bike, it hasn't been running right. It tends to start well, and has a decent amount of power for a 200+ lb kid on it, but once I attempt to hit the top of the power band, it tends to cough and sputter like it's choking. When I recently checked to carb to jet it, I realized ALL but one of the Jets are missing. I've checked the reed valves, they seem to be in great shape... However, today (it is a warm day) it ran great for a while, after topping off the oil and running with the choke half on, this bike also leaks oil, but I'm almost convinced that this is a jetting issue (being that they're missing)  at this point, but I've also never put a top end in this bike. Thanks for any help, I'd just like to get an opinion on what you guys think.   I know I'm all over the place btw, sorry for that
