'12 WR450F Rear Sprocket Change, What Size Chain?

6 posts in this topic

Hey All,

I have a 2012 WR450F & its time for a new set of sprockets & chain. I have been running with the stock 13/50 sprocket set up and want to change to 13/52 (riding mostly tight woods, rocks & hill climbs). I know the stock chain is a 520/114, can I use the same length chain or should I order a 520/116? I'm assuming the 2 additional teeth on the rear sprocket would use 2 additional links on the chain...not sure if this is correct?

Thanks for the help.

It's not.  The 520 chain has a pitch of 5/8". or .625".  Pitch is the distance from one tooth to the next.  You're adding two teeth, so you are increasing the circumference of the sprocket (at the link center) by 1.25" from 31.25" to 32.5".  The chain runs over only half (rather roughly) that extra distance, or only an extra .625", and comes at the sprocket from two different sides.  That should be only .3125" (5/16) for each of the top and bottom runs of chain, and that's the approximate distance your wheel will move forward as a result.  You should be able to run sprockets from 47-53 teeth using a 13 in front with a 520/114.

Had to go with the 116

I have a 53 on the rear and I had to go with a longer as well. No way around it AFAICT.
