2012 Engine Braking

10 posts in this topic

My wr450f has some pretty serious engine braking down in the low gears. Do the motocross 450's have the same engine braking? Are you able to change this without taking off the head? I've used different maps but doesn't effect it under 3k I 'believe'.

Not really, this is just how a high compression four stroke motor works.

If you ride a two stroke after having been riding a four stroke it will amaze you as the two strokes have almost NO engine braking.

Shift up.

Don't use the motor as a brake.

Stay in the higher gear, and use the clutch to modulate your way to acceleration.

This gives you the best of all worlds: controlled traction and no engine braking.

Nice! Thanks for those. Yes world's different from my cr125 lol obviously.

Wow thats a big jump in bikes and yes you'll notice a lot of compression braking from one to the other. Over time you may enjoy that compression braking. You just have to use higher gears as mentioned and get used to it.
