Help Me Choose! 2001 WR426F or 1999 YZ400F

12 posts in this topic

For the same $2,500 I can get either a 1999 YZ400F or a 2001 WR426F. Both are CA street legal which I need. I am 6'1" and 210lbs. I want to ride 80/20 dirt (mostly trails but want to hit the dunes as well). Seems like the YZ and WR are both 250lbs. dry. Bigger gas tank on the WR but better power on the YZ? Is there any huge difference between these two bikes that would sway me one way or the other? Right now they seem like they would be a draw...thoughts??? Thanks in advance

Another thing is that California has recently taken to rescinding license plates from dual sport bikes that were converted from off-road only models when the title is transferred.  Those two might be old enough that they don't come under that program, but you should check with the DMV before buying any such bike where having the plate is an important part of the buy decision.

With the difficulties of getting a plate since Jun 2004, a street legal bike in SoCal generally goes for 1K-ish more than the same bike with off-road only (green/red sticker) tags...

The CA DMV is currently recalling the license plates on post '02 "red sticker" bikes that were plated by whatever means.  Don't buy a used one based on the plate until you check with them first.

I thought the CARB/DMV drug deal was 1 Jan 04, and plated before 31 Jan 04? I know CARB was going after dealers for DMV mistakes after '04 (ie. GP cycles), but I thought the '04 grandfather clause stuck???

Check.  90% sure they backed out to the '02/'03 Green/Red boundary, so to speak.  There was something in the paper about it a while back. The change also applied to "red sticker" bikes plated in another state and then moved here.

I wish the big 4 would just get it over with and make all the gymnastics unnecessary. I like the KTM EXC ( rode one in the LAB2V a couple years ago), but I'm not in the crowd that can go drop 10-11k on a dirtbike...
