07 YZ450F - Timbersled Snowbike / Dual Sport / Mountain Singletrack - Buildup

20 posts in this topic

Two months ago I picked up a 2007 YZ450F for a Timbersled host in WA state. It was in need of a top end so I got it for a decent price of $1300. My plans were to rebuild it, get a license plate on it for summer singletrack / DS and run the Timbersled in winter.

Other than the PMB spark arrestor, skid plate , JD jetting kit, and an extra oversize tank, it was stock.

I had an 07 WR450F that I tried to make into a do-it-all bike, but it suffered from being too heavy and poorly suspended. This bike should be the ticket.

I only rode it around in the yard, barely enough to get it to third gear... time to strip it down

And pick up a 2014 Timbersled LT

Split cases for new crank and WRF 1st and 5th gearsets

Took a flap disc to the frame. I like it. My CR250 is polished but it is too much work to keep shiny

WRF gears put in.. time to reassemble. New stainless Kibble White exhaust valves / springs as well (OEM Intakes looked good). Wiseco hi compression piston. New seals, etc
IMG_20141105_180035.jpg

While assembling, I installed a Ricky Stator 35W lighting stator.

Wire loom... red cord is for rear turn signals + tail light. There is also a 12V acc plug and power to heated grips
IMG_20141111_215952.jpg

Small 39,000 uF capacitor + CDI unit here. I am going to run a regular headlight for DS inspection, so it would be in the way in stock location.
I also used a scooter 100CC recitifer / regulator off ebay, which I put in between the rear upper motor mounts under the tank.
IMG_20141111_214413.jpg

HOLESHOT Smart Pad for my GPS android phone running MyTrails. Also, heated grips and dual sport switch
IMG_20141111_220718.jpg

25A fuse from stator

Winterized finished product.

With Moose hand guards. I still need to cut some buckets up for deflectors. Flatland Racing skid plate + Radiator guards

Tail light / headlight / turn signals will come next summer when the tires go back on :)

Nice job, I think this is the best way to do a timbersled conversion (rebuild), keep updating on its performance e/t/c...Do you have seat time on snowmobiles as well?

They are the most fun you can have.. period. OK, I think a wing suit ..might be more fun.. Last spring on top of a volcano

Transmission Swap-

I purchased parts from Partzilla

WR transmissionicon1.png parts list
axel main 5TJ-17411-20-00
5th pinion gear 5TJ-17151-20-00
3rd pinion gear 5TJ-17131-20-00
4th pinion gear 5TJ-17141-20-00
2nd pinion gear 5TJ-17121-20-00
1st gear wheel 5TJ-17211-20-00
5th gear wheelicon1.png 5TJ-17251-20-00
3rd gear wheel 5TJ-17231-20-00
4th gear wheel 5TJ-17241-20-00
2nd gear wheel 5TJ-17221-20-00

You'll have to add new head and base gasketsicon1.png also.

This adds about an additional 16mph over stock gearing and makes 1st alot lower.

I'm looking to put a stator and headlight on my 07 yz450f. But when I go to rickystator's website I can't find any stator that will fit my 07. How did you get a stator from them?

What is the capacitor for or what does it do? Also do I need a capacitor and regulator or can I simply wire the headlight right to the stator? I'm sorry for all the questions, but don't have any experience with this particular topic. I might run an led taillight but for now I just need a headlight so if I can make it home of I'm out a little after dark. I'll also use a on/off switch for the lights do its not constantly on. Thank yiu for your help.

are your hand guards cut up taping compound buckets? :smirk: pretty genius, get some better coverage too...

capacitor acts as a battery. You need a rectifier/regulator. I listed everything you need above, you will probably need to google the items to see what they are and how they work..12v electrical basics

bike ran great, a bit fat on the low/mid so I backed the pilot down to the stock 45 and main still at 160, 1-3/4 turns out.

I really like the project! Pictures were great, but why would you spend all the time and money to make the bike that solid and look that good and then cut up buckets for hand guards!! lol Not a bad idea, but it would look so much better with even just a cheap set of real guards.

does it trench dig worse than a sled in the deeper stuff?

no, usually you can just rock it back and forth and ride right out. 10000x less work getting out.

Ricky stator is still good.

bucket busters are legit man. Ask Scott Summers

Great build, pics and info. No time for projects so I'm considering buying a new 450 and timbersleds LT kit.

I sold my last bike a couple years ago and regret it so I'm debating on selling my snowcheck Polaris SKS155 and doing a snowbike. My kids and I want to get back into dirt bikes anyways.

Nobody I ride with has one and most of us are getting new sleds this year. We aren't trail riders however we do live in Michigan so we do have to ride some trail to get to our play areas. Just wonder how slow this setup would be riding with a group of sleds.
