Front Rim Fitment Problem

9 posts in this topic

I have a 2006 WR 450F

When I bought the bike a couple years ago, I saw a spare set of rims out on Flea-Bay so I bought them and shoved them in the shed

I recently put on a set of street tires to have a bit of fun with a supermotard setup

Everything went fine until I was finally putting on the front rim

The problem seems to center around differences on the right side where the speedo drive hooks up

In addition, it looks like the width across the whole thing is 10mm less on the new one, which really ends things right there I think

The new rim has two identical bearings on each side of the hub

My existing rim has sort of an asymmetrical setup where the bearing on the speedo is a different size and placed more outboard.

So that I dont make this mistake again, does anyone have any idea what I bought?

I assume I bought a rim for a WR and not a YZ in that both have a speedo drive.....maybe its from an older model WR or off of a 426 or a 400 ??

(I assume a YZ does not have any speedo drive)

Don't know the exact answer, but the front hub was changed in '02 to the same part number as the '06 uses.

And you're right, no speedo drive on the YZ.

It looks like the hub bearing might not be setting all the way in the hole. There should be a spacer that is positioned inside the hub between the bearings & should regulate how deep the bearings seat in the hub. You can measure the inside length from inside of the lower fork legs where the axle sticks through. Then measure the length of the spacer & width of the bearings plus the width of the spedo adapter. They should all equal the inside length from inside of the lower fork legs. Look at the parts layout in the manual & you should see what I am talking about. Good luck.

You bought a a very early WR250 / WR400 / early WR426 front rim - it has 4 ribs running across it from each side on the hub

The 450's all use the same hub. The hub is smooth

You can interchange them on the YZ by using the appropriate spacers to suit the wheel , but they don't interchange on the WR because as you have fund out, the speedo drive doesn't fit

I had the same prob I have 2006 wr450and put 2008rimd on I had to machine the inside the speed drive and by the wheel spacers for a 2008 and it worked

2006 & 2008 bikes use exactly the same hub / wheel and interchange without and modifications

There is another underlying cause with your bike as to why a 2008 wheel didn't fit your 2006 bike
