Yamaha WR450 supermoto project

Hi guys,

I recently sold my VTR SP1 racebike to get me a more fun and flickable bike for around town.

I bought a WR450f from 2006 in supermoto trim. The bike was ok overall, but could use some tlc to get it to my likings. The engine was overhauled last May, which the guy got a receipt from.

I rode it for a hour, and than began to tear it down.

Here are some pics:

Frame and spring are already at the powdercoater. Frame gets a RAL 5022 coat and the spring gets a white coat.

Sandblasted the enginecovers, sprayed them with heat resistant mattblack and baked them.

New tyres are already in, Heidenhau K73's

While waiting to get the frame back, I'm refreshing some electrical harness, freshing up the shocks with new oil, aso...

I have a YZ400f that I would like to put slicks on; what tire and rim size would you suggest that I get?

Thanks, your bike looks sweet btw... The only problem that I'm having now is the cost. Is it really worth it to buy everything preassembled or would it be cheaper to become a "scavenger" for complete wheel components?

Some more progress, while waiting for my frame...

Mounted all the covers back on the engine.






Took the carb apart to do some good cleaning.




Getting info from the forums about function aso from all the parts of the carb. Read some interesting things about unplugging the TPS and blocking off the AIV. Also found some nice jetting charts in the database here on TT. Also read the whole ' adjusting the AP' topic. The timing and duration of the squirt is fine, but is doesn't squirt the stated 6-8ft...the squirt just reaches the intake of the head...checked the AP membrane while cleaning the carb, and it's fine. Maybe there was some debris in the routing...I'll have to test it later on when I got the carb mounted again.

I know my way around a little with 2stroke carbs, but a 4 stroke carb is somewhat different ?

Btw does anybody know what needle came stock in these engines back in '06? This is what I found in the carb right now:

MJ 178
PJ 45
SJ 65
LJ 50
SAJ 80
BDDU needle 5th clip
2T OUT on fuelscrew

Hi, the bike is sold again! I thought it wasn't that good for street use. The bike was nice for short rides, but when I wanted to ride a little longer than one tank, I was getting tired soon. Now there's a Aprilia SXV 550 in the garage ? which I'm wrenching on (needs a new engine, not properly looked after). I hope this canon will give me satisfaction...

About the oil gauge...the thing came with the bike when I bought it. Maybe you can find something on eBay?

I gave up the supermoto project this year , money reasons (I purchased year 2000 WR400F in food condition but pretty expensive this year)

I am NOT !!! a pro street-rider, mainly we go dirt riding in the woods.

MY QUESTION!!! I could buy for an affordable price a full set of enduro wheels (front 21 rear 18) from a YZ426F to my 2000 WR400F.

WHAT DO YOU think about putting some street-tires on a secondary wheel set but not a 17" SM set, rather a 21" enduro wheel set, just for easy riding at summer?

I am not a "pro" Supermoto rider, I just would be happy to be able to ride at concrete/asphalt road, not to have the knobbed dirt-tires on.

what do you think about this? is this a bad idea or it just could work if I would live with it?

 

please if somebody has a real-life experience about putting street-tires on 21" front, 18"back enduro wheel set, let me know  about it.

Yup, been doing this since TT500 days gone by...

Metzler 90/90 H21 ME33 and 130/80 V18 ME55. Good prices here in NZ, good mileage and good road grip. Avon also did 21' fronts, but I found them a bit hard and took to long to get road heat in them. (Made them slippery when cold)
