Just wondering if any forum members that bought the EXP for $400 wish they had spent the extra coin on the Zstart or the core EXP. Anyone with clutch buyers remorse?

I just installed the Z Start Pro and offroad weight flywheel tonite so don't have a lot of experience to share, but from what I can tell it seems like it will be just fine.

 

BTW, grayracer513 I set it up with the Med/Soft setting per your suggestion.

 

Is it normal for the clutch to make a slight noise at start off when the clutch is engaging? Nothing major, just a slight sound like it is slipping which I guess it really is as it goes into gear on the soft setting.

 

I only got to ride it a few minutes just to make sure it was working properly and all seemed fine, just wanted to make sure the noise is normal.

 

While I'm at it what is the deal with the clutch feel, as in does it ever feel like normal or is it always light?

I started with the EXP and had lots of issues with it. It slipped in the 450 at higher rpm. It was great down low but after that it would not hold. After talking with rekluse they said there was not a good fix for it. Sent it back and got the z start pro instead. The z start pro is amazing. The bike works better. Better traction, pulls harder out of the turns and stalling is a thing of the past. I would recommend spending the extra cash on the z start pro.

I would break it in and check your clearance per the rekluse manual. A little noise is normal. You can try running shell rotella oil as well. I run semi synthetic yamaha lube and have had zero issues. As for clutch fell its always gonna be light. At high rpm it stiffens up but its still ktm soft.

"Medium/Slow", not soft.

 

Don't know what noise you're talking about.

 

At an idle or with the engine off, the lever feels almost disconnected.  Normal.  Once the clutch engages, the lever feel is still an easy one finger pull, yes.  Also normal.

While i'm on the YZ250, and it's a different bike...i just sold my exp 2.0

 

Didn't like it personally, will be going to a magura next.

So there really is no need to get the high dollar model for woods riding.?.

I have rode bikes with the core exp and the z start pro in my bike and i prefer the z start. the core has a on off feel, whereas the z start feathers and you can feel it helping you gain traction.

I will report back once I get to ride some and see how the medium/slow setting feels and if the noise continues or was just there because of it just being installed, not riding it long and not having adjusted it at all.

 

In my limited use, which was about 5 mins late at night after it was installed, it seemed to work properly. When I put it in gear it did not move and when I accelerated it engaged, but not abruptly and easily changed gears without the clutch and stopped moving once no throttle.

 

What else can be used to measure the gap between the pressure plate and top friction disk to ensure proper clearance because the Z Start Pro kit I got was used and they included everything except those little gap check wires or what is the correct gap measurement?

Find the Rekluse web site and download a setup manual to start with.  Customer support can probably supply you with the wire gauges.

 

The bike acts almost exactly like an automatic trans in a truck.  The configurations are easy to change, just spring switching and add or remove 3 balls.  Fiddle with it.

 

When specifically does it make the noise?  You said "when it goes in gear", which I doubt is actually what you mean.  You should pull the lever when you put the bike in gear, as the clutch will release a little bit cleaner that way. 

 

Check the inside of your clutch cover.  There's a raised area behind where the Yamaha logo goes that just barely contacted the spring plate on mine.  I ground it down a bit with a rotary file and it's good.  You could also double up the gasket.

I have been using the 3.0 disk for about 2 months on woods rides with my 2011 450. I am a former A class motocross rider so I ride mine pretty hard. I have had no issues with mine...it will slip a tiny bit if you really lug it a gear a two high, but overall I am very happy with mine. I think one of the keys with any clutch that is lubed with engine oil is to frequently change your oil. I change mine every 5 hours. I also used the heavy engagement springs and brought the idle up a little. The core disk is the same as the EXP it just has two less plates to fit the disk.  I think if you were motocross racing you would need the EXP but trail riding is fine.  My riding buddy has the Z Start and likes it but we have seen very little performance difference and the installation is a snap with the 3.0.  It can also be removed very quickly and reset to stock verses the Z Start.  Just my two cents.

Happy doesn't cut it, I freaking love my Rekluse Z Start Pro!!!

 

I got to ride Wed nite and it was instantly obvious what a difference it makes. The better part of my trails would make most mtn bikers happy and the Rekluse didn't stall one time, not once. I even tried to make it stall and couldn't get it to. I even went down twice and it didn't stall either time.

 

I had heard all the hype from many sources, including several friends that have had a Rekluse for a year or two, but until you ride a bike with one you really cannot appreciate the difference it makes.  Riding tight technical terrain is instantly much easier, faster and more fun. Not to mention you can blast into a corner on a track in 3rd or 4th gear, lock up the rear sliding and backing it in and not even worry about it bogging down and stalling, you can roll in hot, down shift a time or two and throttle out, all without ever touching the clutch unless you just want to.

 

I basically didn't have to use my clutch at all, the only time I did was on a rough steep hill and that was simply to get the RPM up a little after the log crossing about 3/4 of the way up. I can roll up to logs in 2nd gear, braaaap to get the front end up, braaap again as I go over and keep on keeping on, never even thinking about it stalling and the same goes for hills with little runup, just roll the throttle and climb.

 

I have drank the Rekluse Kool-Aid, I cannot imagine riding/racing in the woods now on a bike without one. I am not one to buy into much hype or just get things to get them because they are the latest greatest thing, but the Rekluse technology truely is revolutionary and while it is not necessary to have a Rekluse auto clutch to ride tight technical woods or anything else it sure it a lot easier and thus a lot more fun and that's what it is all about anyway. So for the people who are like "it's cheating" or "you're just to lazy to use the clutch" and so on, fine they can keep on riding without one, but as for me I'm a believer now.

Which would be the better clutch if I race motocross? The Core EXP that has a similar clutch feel to stock, or the Z-Satrt Pro?

Will the Core still allow me to rev my bike at the gate on starts? I also ride off-road as well.

I can see where it would be a fairly easy swap between the Core EXP and the stock plates to race MX if I need to.

The Core feels like a normal clutch in all aspects and might be better for motocross. Starts would be the same as the clutch action is maintained on all Rekluse clutches.  The 3.0 will be a very stiff pull where the core will be normal.  If you are just doing 5-6 lap motos I think the 3.0 would be fine. If you are an A level rider pushing it hard the core would probably be better.
