08 yz450 only 4 gears?

48 posts in this topic

Never owned a yz450 before.this is my 1st one. Anyway this thing is pretty nice. I bought it for 1700 bucks from a friend of a friend. Starts first kick every time. But when i bought it the guy told me it was a 4 speed. I took it for a ride and sure enough only 4 gears. Still works great though. But when i looked up the specs on an 08 it says they are five speeds. Was 4 speeds an option or what? Not sure why its only got 4 gears. I hope 5th gears not broken or something. But it doesnt act like there is another gear, it just stops shifting like thats all the gears there is. Sorry for the dumb question. But can somebody help me out.

Well you could order a transmission kit and put it in.... or someone paid a good bit extra to have it with a 4 speed from factory. Check the rest of the engine and trans out if you are ever bored it may have some more goodies on it

Are you sure it's a 2008 and not an 03-05? Possible they told you the wrong year. The 2003-2005 came from the factory with only 4 gears. If it has a blue steel frame that's what you have.

Yeah it could be that too I bought an "03" yz 125 onetime and it turned out to be a 01 only difference on them was intakes are different. I tried to order a new one and it wouldn't fit so I ordered another and sane thing. Look at the frame the 4th two digits are your year. I solved my problem with that

No it has the aluminum frame. And i looked on the frame for the number and the number is jyacj10c38a027446 so im not sure how to tell what year it is by that number

Well then why would it only have 4 gears. If 5th gear was broken i would know it right. Would it still try to go in 5th gear but just not work? Cuz when i try to go to 5th it just wont. It acts like it only has 4 gears. Hell i dont know. Is it possible that some body put an 05 engine in a 08 frame or would it not fit?

Looking at the right side of the engine, is there an external steel oil line with 3 branches with one running up to the cylinder head?

How about a couple pictures? This could speed the process of figuring out what's up up greatly.

That's cute. What's the part number on that?

Is there a possibility the engine has a 4 speed transmission dropped in? Maybe something for the dessert for wider ratio riding?

The 4 speed from an '03-'05 YZ450 will not bolt into an '08, and the 4 speed isn't a wide ratio box. The first 3 gears are the same in the 4 and 5 speed YZ450's, and the ratio of the 4 spd 4th gear is in between that of the 4th and 5th on the 5 speed.

What IS possible is to bolt in (more or less) the complete engine from an '03-'05, which is why I asked the question about the external oil line.

No. They never do.

How about this - does the year code on the engine # match the year code on the frame?

no there is no steel line

That's definitely a Gen2 engine, and should be a 5 speed.  Sounds like exploratory surgery is in order.

well is it possible that someone made it a 4 speed? And how would i tell without splitting the cases. Im not good with bottom end work.if 5th gear was broken wouldnt it still try to shift into 5th. Cuz like i said after 4th it just feels like theres no more gears.

so the frame is definitely an '08. i looked that number up and confirmed it.  what's the likelihood somebody grenaded the motor and put an earlier year in?  that's what i'm leaning towards as an explanation.

I have a 2006 yz250. It was fully rebuilt top to bottom last winter before racing started
rode all year and it was fine
the problem I am having after winter start up is
starts no problem, run decent, when I turn the throttle smoke and. Lack oil spray out of the silencer like if I put a glove on there's a nice layer of oil

also the part of the carb that comes out of the tps and sits on the throttle slide. To me seems loose as in I can lift it to a point and it doesn't spring back. Is it suppose to stay tight to the top of the slide
it feels like it doesn't any force down till about 3/4 throttle when I hold it up with my finger

also when I lean my bike over the idle picks up a lot

      2009 Husky WR 300.
      New top and bottom end.
New brake pads and they were just bled.
      Hyde skid plate.
FMF Gnarly pipe and FMF Q-Stealth silencer.
      JD Jet kit.
Comes with extra cylinder, head and piston.
Comes with lighter springs for the suspension.
      Pulls like a mule.
This is an awesome trail bike. If you ride Georgetown, Foresthill, Elkins Flat or Chalk Bluff this bike will not let you down.

Apologies for the long post, but I’m including as much info as possible.
      I have a 2-Stroke Yamaha TDR250 1KT, same motor as the TZR250 apparently.
I just completed a top-end rebuild. I only replaced the left piston as the right one look good. Probably should have replaced both, but anyway…
My problem is the right cylinder/exhaust gets very hot very quickly and smokes a lot. The exhaust is hot only after 30 seconds of idling. The left remains room temperature and does not smoke.
I don’t want to ride it too much in case it causes irreparable damage. But when I did try to ride her, I can only get a few hundred meters before she cuts out. I have to start again and can not get into 2nd gear before it stalls again. I’d have to limp home at a bicycle’s pace as anything above idle revs kills the engine.
Not sure if the poor running is related to the hot exhaust, or another problem entirely.
      I’ve done the following troubleshooting:
      - swapped around plugs – no difference
      - swapped around plug leads – no difference
      - swapped around Carburetors (but not the Jet Needles) – This then made the left cylinder smoke and the right smoked a little, but not as much as previously. The carbs are back on their original sides as they are specifically left and right.
      - sprayed carb cleaner onto the carb boots to test for air leaks and that had no effect.
      - Raised the Jet Needle in the right carb for a richer mixture – It appears to smoke less (could be my imagination), but it still gets hot quickly.
      - Checked the plugs again and the troublesome cylinder’s plug looks to be running very rich (all dirty), so I lowered the needle this time for a leaner mixture. Still no difference.
I removed the exhaust and wiped my finger in the cylinder’s exhaust port. Looks like black paint!
Has anyone ever experienced this and what was the solution?

just curious if anyone has ridden both the new and last gen yz450 and how different they REALLY are. i can read reviews all day but theyre all from professional mx racers that probably pick up on little things id never notice. selling my ktm, pretty set on getting me a new yz, my price range is around 4k so that puts me in the range of buying a 2010-2013 yz450. however im being told from a few guys who ride these that i really need to save and spring for a 2014+, the cheapest 2014 i could find was $5000. are the 14's really that much better? should i save and go for one of those? My main actual question is with that same money could i make a 2013 the same or even better? What ever one i decide on ill probably do the same to either for aftermaket parts, exhaust , tuner, fly wheel weight and a lowering link in the rear. Ive ridden a 2015, which is what sold me on one, i loved it! i just dont wanna be disappointed if i get the early gen. either way will be better around the track then my ktm exc! lol, but man that electric start is soo nice

Hello everyone I am 16 years old and I was a quad rider ever since I was young. I had a ltr 450 that I sold recently. I'm about 5'5"-5'6" tall and weigh about 115 lbs. I rode my friends rm 125 just this past weekend and I enjoyed riding the bike! I'm looking into buying a 125 but I still cant decide weather to buy a yz 125 or a ktm 125 sx. Again I'm a newer rider to dirt bikes but I still know how to ride one and I'm also new to 2 strokes but I've been doing a lot of research lately and learned a lot about them and all the maintenance with them. I will be using the bike for pretty much all trail riding. I just want a reliable bike that I can take care of that will give me no problems. Any Opinions/Preferences? Thankyou Everyone!
