Front suspension, 2011 WR450

I have a 2011 wr450, stock suspension, single track use.  Ever since new (1200 miles ago) the forks have been stiff for the first couple of inches, then worked fine once past that point.  Generally for small jumps in the 1-4 foot range or just dropping the front end down from an exuberant acceleration wheelie etc.  I checked and there was no air to bleed.  I am about 180 with full gear.  Is this normal?  Did dealer put in too much fluid, clogged valve?  Open to suggestions as I am sure the forkes are not performing at thier "peak".

  It sounds like your forks are out of alignment. Loosen the right pinch bolts (seated right) pump the suspension and lift the wheel and spin-then slam on the brakes. 

Do this a dozen times, then re-tighten the pinch bolts.

 

The stock oil is junk. The dealer gets the forks already oiled.

 

You probably have broken bottom valves too, very common problem on that fork, cause that base valve is plastic.

 

Get a Smart Performance rebuild and upgrade kit.

It sounds like your forks are out of alignment. Loosen the right pinch bolts (seated right) pump the suspension and lift the wheel and spin-then slam on the brakes. 

Do this a dozen times, then re-tighten the pinch bolts.

Isn't the base valve still a spring on the 2011?

I agree with Bill though on the front end binding, at least it's a simple check. Just loosen the non-brake caliper side axle clamp bolts and do the process he describes.

Yeah, you are right, it's spring that goes 'sacked' in a few rides.

Did you replace/drill/do nothing with the YZ base valve?

Sounds like the lower triple clamp pinch bolts may be too tight. If the lower clamp's bolts are too tight they will cause binding on the upper bushing of the stancion tube.

 

Loosen and re-torque them. Spec is 15lb/ft top and bottom however I feel 15lb/ft is too much for the lower triple. I torque them to 15lb/ft on top and 12lb/ft on the lower.
