No experience with Tokyo Mods, but heard great stuff about thier work with Hondas. Zip Ty was doing good stuff with YZ carbs. Not sure about the 426 though.

You would probably find it difficult to believe how much better a 426 will run by simply replacing the entire carb with one from a '05-'09 YZ450.  It's basically a bolt-on swap, for one thing, the fuel circuitry is more sophisticated, and they're much more tunable than the originals.  Most people I know of who have gone down that road ended up so happy with the results that they didn't even change the 450 jetting.

It would also be a much better platform for the Tokyo mods anyway, if you decided to go that way.

Hey Gray, I noticed you said to use a 450 carb from an '05-'09 model.....any reason the '03-'04 is excluded from the group? The reason I ask is I am building a 426 street tard for grins and I have a complete carb from an '03 450 I was planning on using.....

Thank you for sharing all of your knowledge with us.....I have learned a lot from you while doing this project!

That one will work, too, and it's still better than what you started with, but the '05+ have an accelerator pump leak jet, which results in a cleaner running bike, and adds another layer of tuneability to it.  If you were still looking for a carb, I'd bypass the '03-'04, but if you have it already, just go with it.

Thank you for the reply, I was thinking about sending the carb to Dick's Racing for them to do their Stage 1 mods which include: "(Stage 1) Includes the adjustable leak jet and installation, an adjustable fuel screw, re-jetting and accelerator pump mods. You can expect instant throttle response, crisp jetting and no hesitation."

Any thoughts about having this done? I could have this done to my carb for "around" the same price as buying an '05+ carb....

They can do that for $200?  Cool.

It depends on how you intend to use the bike.  The modified carb will likely be more suited to MX than off-road or recreational riding.  I have no experience with Dick's, but that list of mods looks like stuff I don't have any use for, myself.

Before you drop that kind of change, try the carb as is.

Tokyo Mods completely tuned my bike and added their signature clear yellow breather hoses.  I told them what fuel and air filter I was running and they did the rest.  It has been about a year now and the bike still starts up first or maybe second kick, cold with no choke.  But that's CA cold - HAHA.  There has yet to be a backfire or any carb related issue.  It was well worth it.

Ok, first off, i am one cheap SOB do it yourselfer!!  :)

I have (2) 06 YZ450Fs

One is a Supermoto bike that i race

One is a MX bike that i just converted to a desert bike, and i will race next season..

Got supermoto bike with low hours on it with a full Pro Circuit system on it.  Ran good, some popping on Decel, nothing major, started first kick.  Friend of mine always raving about his Tokyo Mods this and that with his Honda.  I have my bike torn down to the frame for some anal rentative maintenance and had the carb off.  I live about an hour from Tokyo Mods, so i figured for $189 for their carb work, i would try it.  Reintalled everything, and WOW.....  Zero Hesitation, pulls like mad, starts first kick every single time!!  With supermotos, especially on Kart tracks, the throttle is always getting chopped, and usually not all that smooth.   ALL, and i mean ALL of the little hiccups and bogging were gone..  Bike feels fuel injected, no BS.

Liked it so much, immediately pulled carb off dirt bike and sent that one in..  Guy called me up and asked me, if i was the same guy that just had his carb in.  When i told you him yes, he laughed, and said, "Ya liked it huh?"  I laughed.

Same deal with dirt bike.  runs flawless, zero hesitation and bogging.

I've done jet kits on older XRs and some 2 strokes, but really didnt want to deal with these more complex newer carbs

Can HONESTLY say the Tokyo mods carb mod is worth everything single penny!  Not 100% sure what they did, but i dont care!!  :)

I got a bag of everything they removed from both carbs,  Replaced the needles, jets, springs, etc..

Love it!  My .02
