2017 yz500f

I was on yamahas website a minute ago and was reading where they improved engine performance and it got me thinking. They went from the 400 to the 426 and then to the 450. And they keep improving and revising the 450. But eventually they will run out of things to enhance or revise engine wise. And as components get lighter and riders get faster I wonder if they will increase the displacement in the future. Just a thought lol. What are yalls opinions?

It's more likely that you will see a YZ350F that's 8 lbs lighter than the 450. It's more usable for the average B rider, and the FIM/MX1/MX2 in Europe has been playing with displacement rules for the future. If that catches on, the AMA might look at this as well.

maybe a wr with bigger displacement. I think the 450 is here to stay just to go with the 450 motocross racing class and all. A slight chance of a mid bore bike like a 350. Im hoping for some big improvements for the yz 2 smokers. They cant keep selling the same bike forever. Either drop it or update the bike.

The downsizing to a 350 reminds me of what Moto GP did, a few years ago they downsized the 1000cc engines down to 800cc's in a hope to slow down the pace and make it safer.....instead riders had to carry more momentum and run faster corner speeds. This made the class significantly more dangerous and there were more crashes then ever so this past year they went back to the 1000cc engines.

For mx it would take all the manufacturers to come together and make a new sized bike for a new class. Would be a lot of work and alot of $$$ in R&D. Otherwise you'd have 1 bike that you couldn't run in the 450 class, but you could run the open class around here at least.

Rather like NASCAR, which became concerned when the 430 cubic inch limit was leading to 200+ mph speeds.  Within a year of downsizing to 405 cid, they were over 200 again, so they went to 355 cid.  A year later, same thing, so down they went to 305, and ...how fast are they going now?  You get my point.

Pencil me in for a 500 4t. I have been in mourning since they quit bulding 500 2t. Theres nothing like fighting for control when your when your hauling ass at warp 9 and being hurled through space. Grayracer I know you miss em.

It probably just take me 2 yrs before I need a top end :-) That silly YZf

its a 478cc kit. There are 500 and 530cc big bore/stroker kits though.

 

you can get a 478 kit off ebay for as low as $400

I got the athena 500 kit along with some hot cams and porting. Very fun bike but you always want more! That's probably just me though. I wish they made something bigger like ESR did for the yz250 2 stroke. They came out with a 325 and 345 big bore kits that are working out great and reliable.

How much R&D do you think the YZ250F chassis would need to fit a 6 mm longer stroke?

There's more work then just a 6 mm longer stroke. When moto GP switched from the 1000 to the 800's they re-engineered the whole engine. Changed the chassis rigidity as well as swingarm rigidity as well as the strength of the swingarm pivot points. There's a lot more engineering them just stroking a 250f 6 mm and sending it out to the showrooms
