Engine Removal Required?

4 posts in this topic

Just curious, for a 2006 yz 450f, do you need to remove the engine in order to remove the head, cylinder & piston? In particular, I wonder if the 4 long head bolts would interfere with the bike frame as you try to pull them out. Is it more trouble than it is worth to try to do a top end replacement without removing the engine from the bike frame? Couldn't find an explicit answer to this on the forum.

Thanks

It can be a little bit challenging, but not enough to make me want to pull the engine.

The head bolts that interfere can be removed when the head comes loose by tilting it after it's clear of the aligning dowels, or take out with the head. Same going back together. The front chain guide can give you a little trouble, too.
