Didn't see any on front page -I also searched for 'miles' and didn't see any..

so thought I'd make a fun, informative and friendly post, sorrrrrryyyy Krankie pants, maybe you could post a link to one of the 'several posts' that specifically talks about miles on everybodies WR450s - cause I'd like to hear about all the miles and reliability of these engines. And what to expect at certain mileage. I'm not looking for trip reports or what people did - miles.

2008 model

5500 miles mainly off road and racing - never been into engine

Oil change every 10-15 hours, oil filter every other oil change

Estimate its about 250 hours of running

One valve has moved 0.01mm!

Just replaced the water pump seal as it was leaking out of the weep hole upon start up

2007

+200hrs, 2nd owner so not 100% sure. I have put 150hrs on it. Oil change every 15hrs or so w/ filter. Valves have moved out of spec once. Not sure of mileage... mostly ride singletrack. Runs flawlessly. Have replaced water pump seal, fork seals, greased bearings and bolts. I have a cush hub.

No one is Cranky. Just waaaay to many repeat repeat repeat posts. It's much faster to find this kind of info by searching, IMHO.

Oh, and MILES is not really what you want to measure. It's HOURS, TYPE OF RIDING, and , MAINTENANCE INTERVALS.

Usually when someone talks about miles, they are referring to 'road miles', because you rear wheel spins 50% more than your front when in the dirt, so you want to monitor engine hours, not miles, as hours will be more accurate.

It's simple: follow the manual maintenece schedule, or follow what is commonly used as a guide line in these forums.

For the WR motor, I follow these guide lines:

Adjust your valves at 5 hours, 50 hours and 150 hours.

Replace your piston/rings/wristpin at 150-350 hours, depending on use. You should 'mic' the piston, cylinder, and ring gap to determine level of wear.

Change your timing chain every other piston, along with the tensioner. The chain costs 18.00 and is the key source of timing slips and related failures.

Change your oil as often as you can, based on air filter dirt: if you have to clean the air filter every ride, you should probably change the oil too. 5-15 hours is a good range.

Use any MA rated oil for motorcycles, 5-50w to 10-40w.

If you wait till your bike runs poorly, or breaks, to do maintenance, they you get what your deserve: a HUGE repair bill.
