how to service 4 strokes?

HEY GYZZ!!

I recently bought a 08 yamaha yz450f. since this the first time i am actually owning a dirt bike( i know it is powerful for a beginer but i have ridden my friends bike and found it just perfect!) , i would like to know what all i have to do to service my bike to keep it in good riding condition. and after how many hours shd i do it??

PS: i will be riding only in the desert..

Download an owners manual, there's a chart that tells you what and how often.

Desert riding is the most demanding type of riding for any engine.

Frequent Motor Oil changes, oil filter replacement and regular valve inspection is a must on 4 Strokes IMO.

After every ride Bleed air from forks, clean and oil air filter.

Every now and then inspecting coolant level, tire psi, lookout for loose bolts, cable lubing, etc...

When needed adjust chain, change tranny oil.

Youll also need to rering or do a complete top end but i dont feel comfortable telling you when to do it, it´s a debatable subject and also depends on how hard you ride the bike and how often you do the thjings i listed.

Air filter needs to be changed for a clean one EVERY ride day in a desert environment. Proper oiling with a good, sticky filter oil is a must.

Oil change frequency depends on the oil you use. In most cases, if you use an automotive oil of any kind, you should change it every ride day, or every second at most, because these oils are not up to the job of lubing the gearbox for any kind of extended period without serious loss of viscosity. (That's right, pornstar, the engine oil IS the transmission oil)

If you use an oil that verifiably holds up longer as a trans lube, you can extend your oil change frequency to 3 or 4 rides (8-10 hours actual run time is as long as I can possibly recommend even with the good stuff). Even using a top brand motorcycle specific blend is not always a guaranty of that, though.

Read through the Common Threads Sticky at the top of this forum's index. You'll find the correct oil change procedure, links top manuals, etc.

the guy who services my bike told me to change the oil after every 10 hours( thats about after aproxx 5 rides).

so which brand oil should i use??

Asking what kind of oil to use is like asking what company makes the most comfortable underwear,everyone's going to say the kind they use is the best. Just make sure you use high quality (not cheap) name brand oil.
