2012 WR450 IMS fuel tank

Anybody using the IMS 3 gal. fuel tank? I would like your opinion on fit and finish of this tank. I have heard some horror stories of aftermarket fuel tanks (IMS, Clarke and Acherbis) Any pictures would also help.

I've used IMS on my last (7) bikes, including the WR's.

Sometimes you get a 'bad' tank that leaks at the petcock, and they replace it right away.

The old tanks had cheezy gas caps, which have since been upgraded.

Best fit, look, and safety ( no ball wall) of all the tanks.

I have had an IMS 3 gal. tank installed for a few months now.

Had a bit of trouble getting it on. There was an issue with the front 'brace' that bolts to the frame. Rang them up and they talked me through how to mod the part so it would fit (just a clamp and some bashing with a hammer fixed it). Good customer service, but it should have bolted straight on really.

Quality seems good but not excellent i.e. screw cap is a little hard to line up when closing.

I was a little concerned about how it would look installed based on some photo's I saw. Personally, I think the bike looks 'tougher' now.

Also, if you have Rad Guards , you may need to mod them slightly so the tank will fit. Just a little filing will do the trick.

Love having a 'normal' range now. Not sure what Yamaha were thinking with that standard tank.

To sum it up, I would recommend this tank.

Are you talking about modifying the shrouds Ims claims need to be cut?

If the shrouds do need to be trimed can you post pictures of the triming needed?

Sorry, I didn't mean shrouds, I meant radiator guards.

Yes, your shrouds will need to be cut. IMS supply a very straight forward diagram. I just used a razor blade to cut/trim them. Super easy, just mark it out and keep trimming and sizing up as you go.

I've had a few IMS 's on my Yamahas and always thought they looked the best. I have broken a seam on them crashing and that sucks but overall they seem to hold up well too. I have not put one on this bike yet, I know eventually I'll have to, but I just don't want to add anymore weight to this bike. In the meantime I'll just pack extra gas.

I have the Clarke 3.6 on my 07 wr450. Had to bend radiator Mount just a little on one side to get it to bolt on.minor issue. love the extra capacity.

I want to buy an IMS tank for my '12 too. Can somebody with the black tank please post a picture of their bike? Thanks!

I ordered one early in the week may be here today

I will post some pictures of what needs to be

Howdy All, here are some pics of my black IMS fuel tank. ..Dam good investment I reckon!! Good price too, had this shipped to Australia the day they came in stock!

Great fit and it was pretty easy to install once I worked it out. As Ricky Roma said you do need to trim a little of your shrouds but a stanley knife makes it real quick and easy!!

Genrlee01, what sort of mileage (kilometreage) are you getting out of a full tank, and what were you getting with the standard tank?

 

One of my riding mates is considering upsizing but is unsure of how much of a gain there would be in terms of range.

 

I've got an 08 with an IMS 3.1 and noticed a good gain in range, but was just curious with the fuel injected bikes.

Since the stocker is 2.1 gallons and the IMS 3 gallons, you can do the math for a pretty close estimation: half again as much range. So if you got say 40 miles to a tank stock, you'd get around 60 with the IMS.

 

That said, with the FI bikes you can make changes to the map that significantly effect the mileage/range, so it is also possible to tune the FI for max range, though that may or may not be the most rideable map.

I prefered the "natural" tank color.  Now, I can see how much I have remaining in the tank.  Color (some sort of "light tan") suits my blue / white cycle, too.

 

Fit / finish were very good, not perfect.  "very Good" rating because one of the fuel pump mount screws, embedded in the plastic, was "cocked", not straight up/down.  Only one, of (8?) screws. Made the job just a smidge harder to install, and heartburn about fuel leakage. (There was none).

 

Sure, I coulda sent it back, but I did not.

I Have one on my 2013 WR450. Fit & finish is good. It is a little tight & you might have to oversize a bolt hole to move a bracket slightly but very doable. I have had 5 or 6 on different bike and no problems with any of them. I like the clear so you can see the tank level.

I installed the IMS 3 gal on my 2012 WR450. Mounting the fuel pump assembly and outlet line was OK, no leaks. As has been mentioned, front mounting bracket needed a little hammer modification. Shroud cutting was very easy using the IMS template (supplied with tank); also used the spacer for shroud frame mount point supplied by IMS. I recently installed Unabiker radiator guards and there were no issues with the IMS tank installed.

I bought my IMS 3 gal from craigslist. any way somebody can post install instructions? Only thing im worried about is shroud cutting. Also I have the Scotts s steering stabilizer, hoping there is no issue with clearance. Has anybody installed with a steering stabilizer?

The kit comes with a paper template on where to cut... did you not get that with the tank? I'm afraid I tossed mine, but perhaps someone can post a pic of theirs you could print?

 

I have a Scotts damper and it fits with the IMS tank no problem.

Call IMS and have them email/fax you the instructions---- they are really good to work with.. No clearance issues with the damper at all!
