I"m in.....

I bought CoopDawg's old bike last night.

Very sound, and mostly already set up for my needs.

I will strip it down to the bone for maintenance next week.

Nice I just picked up brand new 09 wr450 and I am going to use for a dual sport. ill keep my ktm for my main trail bike.

coopdawg comes across as pretty knowledgeable, so you should have a pretty good bike to start with! Welcome back Krannie!!!

(you drank the orange kool-aid and spit it back out!!!)

Thanks!

The bike has some miles, but absolutely no abuse what so ever that I can see.

I am stripping it down next week and installing a new piston/rings/tensioner/hot cams and doing a general overall service.

Welcome back to the blue team. looks like a very nice bike.

Hey Krannie

If you are up for educating others.

How about a photo diary as you go ? ;)

Congrats, that is one clean looking bike.

There won't be much to photograph.

I'll take what I think is pertinent.

My friend Paul at AS Racing is going to do the Motor work.

He has already done the YZ suspension I bought a while back to my valving specs, and using .52/5.3 spring rates.

Here's the build list:

  • OEM PISTON, RINGS, TIMING CHAIN AND TENSIONER
  • UPGRADE CAMS http://www.hotcamsin...rch.aspx?page=1
  • R&D REMOTE FUEL SCREW
  • MERGE RACING APUMP LINKAGE SPRING
  • EXTRA UNI AIR FILTER (already have these!)
  • RE-GREASE WHERE NEEDED
  • ADD FRONT TURN SIGNALS, FIX WIRING ISSUES
  • REPLACE FRONT JAT HID LIGHTING UNIT WITH STOCK 2012 SHELL WITH HID ADDED
  • INSTALL RE-SPRUNG/RE-VALVED YZ SUSPENSION (in hand)
  • OIL AND FILTER AND OIL SCREEN
  • NEW FRONT FENDER (UFO)

BY THE WAY I will have an Airtime HID headlight available for anyone who is interested.

It requires a Re-wound and by-passed stator and upgraded Rectifier, to work.

It is the headlight in the picture. It has a BD sticker on it, but it's an JAT HID system (much brighter and HD build quality).

I will also have available the Smart Performance upgraded Forks available too.

Better pics:

...and the NTM 2008

NOTHING else handles as good for play riding.

I've tried every KTM, in various states of tune, and they SUCK in comparison.

FYI the carb already has a merge spring so you can save a few bucks there.

See if AS cant sneak you a couple pics of the piston..it would cool to see what 200 hours of run time looks

Iike.

Else, I'm out your build thread!

Very cool Aaron, thanks.

Yeah, there will be pics. Paul is a pic'er tak'er

I bought my '06 WR450 used, and proceded to put over 200 HARD racing hours on it. Then before going to Baja permanently, I decided to replace the piston. When I compared the old with the new, there was no measurable difference between the two!!!

STEP ONE:

DISMANTLE!

eagerly anticipating more photos... I really hope you replace those hand flap finger trap things on the handlebars with some bark busters.

200hrs is nothing judging by how Coopdawg takes care of his bike.. I put 100hrs on mine last year and it looks like it has gone through a war. I adjusted the valves once and that's been it, other than a dozen oil changes and air filter cleanings.

I would be lying if I said I didn't miss my wr450. It was an 05, heavy as hell, slow turning, slow stopping, etc... yet... it was so damn good.

My KTM I have now is a good race bike, but its just that... a race bike.

It's clear to me the Coop didn't like to fall, and that's a good thing.

Plastics appear 100% original, and have only one low-side drop evidence of crashing.

The motor is now open. It will get mic'd tomorrow. YZ suspension is being re-sprung and valved.

The '13 front fender and Headlight are on the way.

I rode my KTM today, as my 450X is down. Man, what a crappy handling bike. Nice and light, trick looking, feels great....until you have to turn it in rocks or whoops. I can hardly wait for the WR.

What, you don't like those doilie handgaurds? Good for gnats and wind....

I've noticed a number of WR owners also have KTMs, myself included. Seems to be a good combo.

Those are some serious triple clamps .

Are they stock dimensions? I quickened the turning on my 04 with the Rekluse Eaxle and it made it a different bike. Now if I could lose 40 pounds off the bike I'd be happy

Battery, exhaust, kickstand, tubes and tires are the only practical way to save weight....about 11lbs.

Beyond that you are getting into 'exotic' territory, and an empty wallet.

My last WR was 261 with a full 2.7 tank. That's 10lbs lighter than my fully tricked-out 450X (but it has .5 more fuel capacity), and only 11 lbs heavier than my 450SXF (with all the trail add-ons).

To loose the 'last' 20 lbs you need to save up about $3500.00.

The motor and frame are what are heavy....so that's not going to change...

A full titanium parts kit (YZ) which includes steering stem, axles, and all visible fasteners, saves only 18lbs.............

A 1972 Suzuki RH-72-250 factory bike weighed 176lbs.

It was so light, that it did not pass FIM inspection, and they added lead underneath the motor to get it to pass......
