I really want to spray my WR450 wheels black ?

howdy all,

I was looking at some bikes today at my local yami dealer and i really like the wr's and yz's with black rims.

I've got the standard silver on my WR450 and I want to find out if anyone out there has managed to successfuly spray or paint there

silver rims black ??

If so how did you do it ?

Any pics would be great !

never done it but i think it would just chip off and not last long at all. you can buy warp 9 rims for around $100 what ever color you want or send yours for powder coat or anodizing will last longer.

It is your bike, you can paint anything you want any color you want.

I suspect there might be some chipping through normal wear and tire changes, but whatever you have painted can be touched up or repainted as needed. If you decide you don't like it after all you can always erase it with paint remover.

Plastic parts might be maddening though.

yeah i might try and see how much powder coating will cost here in Sydney. The rims for $100 will not possible in Australia ?

You guys get cheaper prices due to more supply. Stuff here costs a bucket load more.

I doubt anything that you can apply yourself will be durable. I think anadizing or powdercoating is the best for aluminum.

But if you want to try some DIY things you may find something that's quick and cheap that you can touch up easily. I would look at machine shop "layout fluid" or "stencil ink". I don't know exactly what they are or how they're used, but found them at Grainger's site. The layout fluid comes in blue & red, I didn't see black. The stencil ink comes in black.

I'd think you want a thin dye like coating that doesn't leave brush strokes or chip like paint. I tried using a "Sharpie" permanent marker once, but it would rub off. You'll definitely have to super clean the surface to even have a chance for anything to halfway stick. I don't know what's the best solvent to clean them with, maybe laquer thinner?

depending on how you ride, powdercoat might not last too long either. your best bet is to get them anodized.

never paint rims. ever. Just don't do it man.

Paint? Won't stay. Won't last one ride.

Anodizing? Stays, but fades, and scratches easily.

Powder coating? Stays, then chips.

All form without function has a price.

what I would do is plastic coat them....it may or may not work but either way the original rims wold be unharmed. its basically the same stuff that is used on pliar handles. you can buy it at larger home improvement centers...like Lowes and home depot here in the states. it comes in dip and in spray can formulas. I am thinking I will do my entire bike plastics with it!!!

aluminum needs a special primer called zinc chromate (not sure spelling)its used to repaint outboard boat engines so its pretty tough otherwise the color coat doesnt stick . ive seen it done for mag truck wheels looks good it doesnt chip too bad , and is easily cheaply touched up . for a spoked wheel ? i have seen it on an old clapped out dirt bike it actually looked better than i would have guessed . i have a bicycle with rattle can painted rims no prep or special primer looks good lasted few years so far but its a beach cruzer never sees abuse like a dirt bike . markit , well that just sucks sorry to here it .

I painted my rims just for fun as I need to get new rims anyway in the near future (when cash is available) I just taped the spokes and the valves, deflated the tyre a little and stuck a bunch of business cards overlapping in between the tyre and rim. I used VHT Wheel paint in gloss black. After about 10 rides in rocks, mud, sand, grass etc there hasn't been a chip or flake. If you want I can upload a pic?

I would be trying KBS RustSeal (available in satin black) it cures rock hard and remains flexible, just make sure you prepare the rims to enable good keying into the alloy

<p>Here it is hope the post works I'm not brilliant at uploading stuff. Had a serious crash this weekend (rider on the wrong side of the road) and has still not chipped even though the forks, bars, headlight, front guard and triple clamps are all bent/broken.
