I plan on buying my son a exc 350, but I was wondering what uncorking and basic upgrades (e.g. exhaust, header) are the norm.

Also, my son lives in another state...

I have been doing some comparison testing between our test 350exc and modified bikes. The only thing to do is have the Euro EXC map loaded by a dealer. Other than the EFI, nearly anything else you can do will not bring any significant performance gain.

Change the stock gearing IMO. The stock 14/45 is way too high. The stock 350 xc-w gearing in comparison is 13/52. That will make the bike a lot better IMO. I went to a 13/48 and it made a world of difference. I hear changing the exhaust makes a difference and also something called the "magic mod" will make it run a lot better. I haven't done it, so I can't tell you what it does or feels like. But the 350 is an awesome machine stock. Just swap those sprockets and you'll have all the bike you'll need.

make sure to get the Euro XCF-w map loaded.  Somewhere around here there is a number for the map.  It makes the bike run a lot cooler.  If you live someplace hot the fan is also a nice addition.  Gearing change is a must as well for trail use.  13/52 is great for tight single track at high elevation and the bike will still run 80+.  You will need a new chain to run that gearing.  You might be able to live with 13/50 or 13/48 if you ride more open single track at low elevations.

Remapping the bike as others have suggested is, to me, the only mandatory mod. It makes the bike run much better.

I've run 13/48, 13/52, stock , and now I'm at 14/48. With the 13 countershaft, I find that first gear is so low that it's unusable unless you're riding rocks at a walking pace. Each gear pulls longer with the 14 on there. Gearing is definitely a personal choice that depends on riding style.

Did you re map it? I hear mixed reviews about people re mapping it. Some people say it makes it "faster", others say it only runs better and other say the ECU just goes back to stock and won't retain the flash. What map did you flash and what are your thoughts about it?

I'm currently running a 13/48 and 1st gear is very short but not usable. I really like the torque though that the 13/48 gives me. I'll try throwing the 14 back on and seeing what it feels like. If I go anything bigger than 48 in the rear, I'll need to get a new chain. And I'd rather spend that money on something else. lol

Oh and you don't have to worry about elevation since the bike is fuel injected. Where I live it's around 500 ft and I felt no difference last weekend at over 8000ft.

Mine has the map from a stock 350XCF-W loaded instead of the EXC map. It made the bike run richer, so it doesn't pop or stall as easily as they do stock, and it makes more power at low/mid rpm than the EXC map did. They dealer also removed the smog stuff at the same time.

Oh okay. Well I'm sure removing the smog stuff had a lot to do with it as well. But here in Cali, I won't risk removing my smog stuff. They are very strict here about it. :prof:  I've heard multiple stories about people going riding and getting stopped by rangers/police and getting tickets since their "smog" stuff was removed. Then their "plated" bikes become illegal to ride on the street and they are only given a red sticker by the DMV. I will not risk that.

Removing the smog stuff has zero effect on performance. I am sure most everyone will do it anyway, but there is no power loss from it.

Here is my latest report on 2013 350exc testing:

Are the muffler/endcaps the same on all the 2012 350 exc/xcw/ Euro exc/Six days exc ?

Just wondering if the EU competition map is designed to work best on a less restricted muffler/endcap than the US exc's ?

I'm wondering this also.

I think 14/52 is ideal gearing for the w's and exc's, first gear is usable, plenty of grunt for logs and vertical faces, and the bike will do 90+mph. I usually don't use first anyways, I feel I have more control over traction in second with some clutch work. I'm also a firm believer that ktm's website has a typo and all the 2012 350xcf-w's came with 14/52 gearing, that or I got a fluke, pretty sure the 350sxf's and xcf's come with 13/52. Every time I read that someone has put a 13 tooth countershaft on their exc/xcf-w they talk about first gear being too low...great now your bike is a 5 speed that only does 80mph. What am I missing here?

I put a 13 in the front and it's not unusable. I used it A LOT on some single track last week. It worked great. It's like people saying 4th, 5th, and 6th gearing is unusable if you only ride single track. Or people who buy super fast cars that go 200mph. Are they unusable since the speed limit is 65? No, it just has its purpose like everything else. Gearing is preference like anything else. Best thing to do is try and find what you like for your type of riding.

The end cap between the xcfw and exc is the same.  the richer map (eu comp) is the same one the recommend with a slip on.  I have that map in 2 bikes and they both have a light gray color on the pipe when using leaded gas.  definetly not too rich.  If so the pipe would be tan or brown.  I know the bikes run much cooler with the eu map, they also run smoother.
On the desmog the only thing I think is critical is to plug off the gas vapor return to the intake.  I thought it made the bike run poorly.  I think you could plug that off an the rangers would never know the difference.  Just remove the brass plug, solder is shut and reinstall.  It would look factory fresh and not allow extra gas into the intake.

Trailtech has listed the map codes for their ignition curve selector switch to work

Quote

For closed course only

Change the way the engine behaves with the flick of a switch. Quickly move between stock, mild and wild based on what the environment demands. Plugs in to stock connectors. Kill switch integrated. Comes in colors that match your bike.

2012 KTM EFI models will require the use of a competition map loaded on the bikes ECM in order to use Trail Tech's 3-Position Ignition Mapping Switch.

Have your dealer install the EU map for your machine:

500  EXC : KM787EU12C0651          500 XCW :    KM787EU12C0601
450  EXC : KM781EU12C0651   450 XCW :    KM781EU12C0601
350  EXC : KM775EU12C0652   350 XCW :    KM775EU12C0601

http://www.trailtech...p_switches.html

I picked up my new 500 xcw last weekend and had the KM787EU12C0601 map loaded.
Next step is order the Ignition Curve/kill switch from Trailtech
I note KTM sell a switch for twice the price. Is there any practical reason to get the more expensive KTM switch ?

With the comp map loaded, is there any worthwhile performance gain to be had by adding a slip on, or PMB endcap, or just modifying the OEM endcap ?

I'm about to pick up my 2013 350 from the dealer either today or tomorrow / whoo ho! /  but i was curious if I should ask them to remap it before i take possession? Is it something they can do if you plate it (officially). If they can do it, will they charge me?

My dirt experience is on a WR250R at the moment, so this will feel like a rocket ship anyway for awile.

Thanks all in advance!
